Receiver DJ Hall, 6-2, 195 lbs. out of Alabama, is an undrafted rookie free agent who in our eyes has impressed almost as much as some of the draft picks. He’s also an interesting story in that he plays a position, wide receiver, which happens to be an area where the Giants are fully loaded.
So we asked Hall why, of all the teams that showed an interest in him, he would pick the Giants. “It’s a perfect program to be in plus I got along with the receivers coach when I was at the senior bowl. I like the atmosphere.”
When we asked to elaborate on the atmosphere, he smiled and said, “The whole attitude, the way the coaches go about things. Either you get it done, or they’re going to find someone else to get it done. That’s kind of what I’m used to in college with Coach (Nick) Saban. He had the same attitude. I wanted to come to a specific place that had the same attitude, and Coach Coughlin has the same attitude. Either you want to win, or you don’t need to be here. I want to win, so that’s why I’m here.”
That right there says a lot about the young man who was passed over by 32 teams in the NFL draft. There has of course been some speculation that the reason why Hall went undrafted was because of some attitude problems he had while at Alabama, but when asked about them, he said he was puzzled as to where these rumors had originated.
For example, one report said that Hall was a “me-first” type of guy who sulked if he didn’t get the ball. Interestingly, this was something he didn’t deny. “Of course I wanted the ball every down, every chance. That’s just the guy I am. I want to do what it takes to win.
I don’t know where (the attitude rumors) came from. The coaches here see what kind of guy I am and what I bring to the table, so I hope I can continue to impress them.”
So what does he plan to do to continue to impress the Giants coaches? Pretty much whatever it takes to see the gridiron. “I’m trying to be the consistent receiver the coach is looking for, -- and not only as a receiver, but also on special teams. Whatever they want to put me at so long as I can get on the field, that’s what I want to do.”
When we asked him specifically what he could do to earn the reps, he said, “I have to do everything. I can’t slack off, or take a play off or miss a rep. If someone’s not in, I want to jump in. I want to do the little things to impress them. If I can do what I’m supposed to and get better every practice, I will make the team. I have to let my play on the field speak for itself.”
Another thing he said he can do is improve his downfield blocking. “That’s actually what I’m working on now. I’m trying to get better with blocking downfield, and seeing the right guy to block and with learning my assignments. I feel like I can always get better. I made a few plays but I think I can always get better. I try to go out and get better every practice. The coaches keep telling me to keep doing what I’ve been doing and don’t be satisfied.”
