RON & GAIL'S SCOUTING REPORT
|
Redshirted in 03. Early in the 07 season broke Trent Dilfer’s record for consecutive passes thrown
without an interception (342) , after which he proceeded to throw multiple PICs (against
Mississippi State alone he threw four). Has the lowest INT ratio in SEC history. For his career he
has 79 TDs with 25 INTs and a 61.9 completion rate. In 07 his completion rate was 63.1% with 40
TDs and 11 PICs.
Improved greatly in the ’06-07 seasons. Makes the clutch plays and is a top athlete with a strong
arm. Goes long with ease and throws a catchable ball with a good tight spiral. He reads defenses
well and consistently throws to receivers’ outside shoulder where only he can get it. Puts the ball
where he wants it, including into tight spots. Generally accurate and very accurate throwing on the
move. While not the most mobile QB in this draft class, he’s no stiff and can make something
happen with his feet.
Generally poised under pressure and has shown on several occasions that he
can lead the team back from deficits. Finds the open receiver. Tough, will take a hit to complete the
play. Knows when to throw with touch.
Often brings ball down before throwing it and has a long, slow delivery. Sometimes holds onto the
football too long and won’t always throw it away when he should. (Finished his career having been
sacked 118 times, some of them coverage sacks). His footwork needs improvement. His misses are
often too high. Some scouts think he doesn’t throw downfield enough but that’s usually the coach’s
decision, so he can’t be held accountable. Birddogs receivers at times and makes bad decisions at
other times. Can be streaky. Doesn’t always follow-though on throws and his footwork needs
polishing .
Music City Bowl: He capped off his college career by throwing four touchdowns, finishing with 40 for the season, and breaking the school record of 37. It was his 19th consecutive game with at least 200 yards through the air and a scoring pass, though it should be noted that it was against a vastly depleted Florida State team. (The Seminoles were missing more than three-dozen players because of injuries and suspensions stemming from an academic scandal).
Senior Bowl: As in college, he didn’t always release the ball in timely fashion and overall didn’t do anything to help his draft status. The slow delivery was apparent and, even though he has a good arm, receivers were often covered by the time he finally released the ball. Though he played in a shotgun, he adjusted to the drops well, though Mike Martz corrected him a few times to get his elbow up more. Game day he lost a fumble which was recovered by Sedrick Ellis for a safety because Woodson was dithering too much instead of getting rid of the ball.
Combine: Didn’t throw because of a hamstring injury. |
