HEAD COACH TOM COUGHLIN
September 28, 2007 2:33 PM

How much did Brandon Jacobs do today?

Brandon did everything.

How did he look?

He looked okay. He moved around pretty good.

So he will be ‘probable?’

No, he will stay questionable.

That is the kind of thing that on Sunday morning you might make a decision on it?

In all likelihood it will come down to that.

Even if he could go would it be more likely you would have to split him a little bit with Derrick Ward?

Definitely. He just obviously needs the work.

Is there a danger with that kind of injury if you rush back?

We have to take all those things into consideration obviously.

Derrick Ward is ok to go?

Ward was sore today again. We worked him yesterday and he was sore today. I expect he will be, but we didn’t work him today.

Do you feel like that is a position in flux right now?

I think it is better than that. I think it is better than that.

What about Plaxico Burress?

Plaxico is following the plan. Just try to get him to where he is feeling the best he can feel on Sunday. He still is doing all the different kind of shoes that were brought in, all the different types of insoles and things like that; he is still doing a lot with that, trying to find something that makes him feel the best.

Was he able to do any team stuff today?

No, he didn’t do any team.

A few years ago when we would ask you about him it was always about off the field stuff. How has he changed and grown as a leader on this team?

I think he has matured. He has gotten better every year. I think what he did in the second half last week was a big difference-maker, if you will, from say, past years. He came back out after the half and really was resolved to play better, not to make the mistakes that he had made in the first half, and he played hard, was focused, and did a good job.

Is that something that maybe a couple of years ago you might have thought he wouldn’t have been able to rebound from?

It was difficult for him, no doubt. It was difficult for him in the past, but he did a nice job of it the other day.

Do you feel like you have addressed your concerns on kick coverage?

We have addressed it. We have worked hard at it, but it has got to happen on Sunday for us. They have a good return team and they put the ball back up in there pretty good.

How did David Tyree seem in the one game back?

He has missed some time, so he is trying to play himself back into his normal position and aggressive self.

How does the new fullback look?

Hedgecock? He has done okay. He picked things up very fast. I talked about the things that I was looking for when he came in here and he does a pretty good job. He is on all special teams.

Can he catch the ball?

Yes, he can catch the ball.

Do you like him mainly as a blocker? He looks like a prototype blocker?

That is what he is. That is what that position is today, but he does have to catch the ball, no doubt.

If you decide to go with Aaron Ross as a starter, do you have any concerns about his ability to go from outside to inside in the nickel?

That is what as coaches you always talk about, to make sure that he is really zoomed in on the spot that he had in the nickel because they will throw out of three-wides and he will be on the field in that position. As you advance him along, you hope he is able to handle anything.

With your pass rush starting to come around, is it as simple as Strahan getting back into form?

No, I don’t think that. I think it is a full group. It is everyone. It is a full compliment of guys who are working well together, first of all, and making progress. I thought, as I watched last week’s game, that Michael was getting closer to being in position, and hopefully that part of it will go along and compliment the other people and our rush will improve.

It seems like everything came together in the second half against Washington?

Sometimes you have to play your way into that. It is difficult to explain, but yet when it happens, it happens. Just hopefully the arrow is pointed up.

You don’t sound real worried about running back, do you think Ward will be ok?

Yeah. We have had practice this week with (Reuben) Droughns and (Ahmad) Bradshaw and (Derrick) Ward and Brandon (Jacobs) has had snaps throughout the week and took pretty much everything today in a limited number of snaps. We just hope between now and game time it gets better. It should get better between now and game time.

The contingency plan is to have Droughns to play more halfback?

Well, he has done that. He did that. Really he has done that for a couple of weeks now. He has done more halfback with Hedgecock here.
