How excited are you to be here, playing for the Giants?
I am very excited. There is no better situation that I could be in right now coming in and playing for the Super Bowl champs. It is fun out there, I get to meet new people and everything. I get to play with great players, they aren’t here yet, but I get to play with great players.
You are here to show them what they drafted?
Oh yeah. Stuff happened. I am really not worried about where I went, I am just happy to be on the team.
Do you think these personal problems are behind you now?
Oh yeah. It happened, it is in the past, I am not really worried about it right now. I am just trying to make the team and trying to bring an impact to my team right now.
Do you look up to a guy like Amani Toomer?
Oh yeah. You have to. He is a legend here and he plays my position so every step he takes I am going to be looking at what he does.
Are you anxious to pick his brain?
Oh yeah. I am going to ask him a lot of questions when he gets here. He is going to get tired of me.
What was your conversation like with Coach Coughlin?
Oh yeah we had a talk, we had a long talk. We talked today and like I said it is behind me, it happened, and I am just ready to bring this impact in. Hopefully go back to the playoffs and just do what we have to do to just win and make my team better.
How can you use being a third round pick as a motivational tool?
Whether I went first round or third round or sixth round I am always motivated. I am a football player. When you are so used to doing something that is what you do. You play football. I am motivated anyway whether I would have been a free agent, a first rounder, or wherever. I am pretty motivated.
Do you feel like you could be a starter in your first season here?
I am just going to take it day by day. Just learn from the best, learn from the other receivers, and just take in everything that they tell me.
What were your impressions of Tom Coughlin when you met him?
He is cool. I like him, I like him. He is a fair guy. I don’t want to say he is old school, but he is a pretty fair guy. He knows what is right and he is steering us in the right direction.
Do you worry that a lot of what people know about you is the negative stuff?
That doesn’t really concern me because like I said it happened and when it is all said and done what are we out here doing? We aren’t out here talking about that stuff, we are out here to play football so I am not really worried about that.
Were you nervous today?
I had all kinds of emotions today. That is how it is. Your first day out here playing, first day in an NFL mini camp, you are going to be nervous, you are going to be excited, and you are going to have all mixed emotions.
The coach said you showed some flashes, how do you think you did out there?
I made a lot of mistakes out there today. If he said I showed some flashes then I guess I did.
What kind of mistakes do you think you made?
It is my first day. You know I am going to make mistakes. I am going to make mistakes. You are not just going in on the first day and just get it Johnny on the dot. That is just how it is. Every practice I am going to get better.
Do you think it is a good situation here for you?
Yeah. This is a good situation here for me. Knowing that I have older receivers that I can look at what they do and just take in everything that they teach me and pay attention and buy in. Buy in, that is it.
How would you characterize yourself?
Everybody has their own style. I feel like bringing myself to this system where everybody plays different. I feel like I am different than Plaxico, different than Amani, different than Steve, and different from all the receivers. We are all different.
What are your strengths?
I don’t know. I play receiver. I just like making plays, that is it.
How are you going to adjust to playing in this league?
The only adjustment I feel like I have to make is just the speed, speed of the game and that is it, that is all, that is it to me, that is what I have seen so far by watching film and looking at other DBs in the NFL. The speed of the game.
Do you think you can be the Giants’ playmaker?
If it is time for a receiver to get the ball, yeah I want the ball, that is what I do. Like I told you, I want to make plays. I am not going to shy away. That is what I have been doing.
Who else did you talk to prior to the practice?
They said to just go out there and do your best. Before the first practice Coach Sully said just go out there and do your best. If you are going to make a mistake, make a fast mistake.
Were you having fun?
Yeah, when you play against the best players it is going to bring out the best in you so yeah it is fun, I was having fun out there.
