FEBRUARY 2008 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

February 29, 2008

Pat, would you have any info on how we could purchase a copy of the Giants dvd? – Ray B.

Eventually I’ll get around to getting it into our online store (probably by this weekend). If you’re in a rush though to get it, I suggest either NFLshop.com or Giants.com.

In response to Ron S.'s letter and to clear up some misinformation, G. Wilson is not asking for a 4 year $12 million deal. He is asking for a 4 year deal with $10-12 million GUARANTEED. There is a huge difference between the two. Like you, Pat, I'm not sure he's worth that large investment, considering his injury history and lack of range in coverage. He's most certainly not in the top echelon of safeties in this league, though he may be the best available in free agency this year. – Joe K.

Thanks Joe. I’d be shocked if Wilson comes back – been saying that since Sept.

Great job Pat! I am getting a little tired of the Strahan soap opera. He knows if he wants to play. He just wants the pay raise and to keep his name in the media. He is an egomaniac and he has about 12 games left as a top end. JR should go about the business of stocking the Giants for the 2008 season and if the right signing comes along, then he should do it. If there is no room for Stray, then so be it. We will be fine without him. – Al S.

I agree Al. but then again I don’t think it’s any secret that I’m a huge, huge supporter of Justin Tuck. I think that kid is going to be really awesome once he gets himself entrenched as the fulltime starter.

Just a quick question about Corey Webster; his coverage skills seemed to have improved for various reasons but what about his tackling abilities? Besides previously being chastised for his lack of coverage skills it was also noted his tackling skills were lacking. Aaron Ross's great tackling is always mentioned. – Charles C.

Charles, Webster has clearly improved across the board to the point where he hasn’t been ruled out to be a starter next year.

I guess I'm one of the fans John Mara was referring to when he mentioned those who saw the Giants play at the Polo Grounds. So, I've been a fan of the Giants for a long time. Nothing in the past could match this year for thrills & in satisfaction. Not the Summerall kick nor the two previous Super Bowls. How can you ever top the unbelievable run to the Super Bowl & the dramatic plays & victory which gave the Giants the Championship? What added to the joy was the vindication of the three men who were so butchered by the media & even the most loyal Giant fans during the preseason & thru the season itself. Reese, Coughlin & Eli did themselves proud. Its fun again being a Giant fan. By the way I would be remiss if I forgot to tell you what a superb job you & your staff do in giving us, the fans such an outstanding publication. Special kudos to you personally for backing Reese TC & Eli despite all the vitriolic comments in LTE. I do not write often but felt I wanted to express my feelings about this great GIANT year. – Stan K.

Thanks Stan.

Regarding Gibril Wilson. One was option was to franchise him for one year for about $4.396 million (and possibly work out a long term deal). If he later became a free agent anyway and another team had come in with a higher offer the Giants would get not one BUT 2 FIRST ROUND picks. (Doesn't sound like too bad of a deal). Instead, it looks like Gibril is gone and the Giants will get nothing if he leaves and perhaps a stopgap sub par lesser player in that position. (1) Is this analysis, including the draft picks, correct? (2) Your thoughts (maybe you've heard something) about why the Giants did not go the (seemingly more attractive)franchise tag route? – Derek P.

Do you think Wilson is worth $5M a year, Derek? That’s supposedly what he’s looking for and what he stands to make in the open market. As far as the franchise tag goes, ask yourself this. Was Wilson REALLY that good last year or was his success due, in large part, to the pass rush the Giants had? Can you tell me that Wilson has been consistent in his career to warrant a huge contract that falls just a hare below what Bob Sanders or Ed Reed earn? If your answer is no to any of these questions, then it should be obvious why the Giants didn’t go the franchise tag route.

February 27, 2008

Just read that Wilson is asking for a 4 yr $12 million deal and the giants are opposed to this. is that really so out of the ballpark for a good young safety? would it be worth it to franchise or transition tag him, either to keep him for one more year or possibly get something in trade for him if they don't want to meet the transition tag. you hardly ever see the transition tag lately, is there a reason? -- Ron S.

Ron, if the rumor is true, then yes, it’s a lot for a guy who has been inconsistent throughout his career and who is now seeking Ed Reed money. It’s too lte to apply any tags on players and even if it wasn’t, remember that the franchise tagged player must get the average of the top five at his position.

DeAngelo Hall might be a good corner and could also help the team. My one reservation is that this team(Giants) has begun to play as a TEAM. That happens when players put their egos in a drawer and think of the team as the prime goal. Moss made that transition going to the Pats, T.O. is doing it in Dallas. Maybe its going to a successful team that helps the transition, I don't know. But if D.H. can't make that change in attitude he would be a detriment rather than a help to a team that has arrived. So Reese has to think about a deal. But why question him, he's done great so far and I trust his judgment. -- Frank A.

Frank, I’m starting to think this rumor regarding Hall is nothing more than a smoke screen. But we’ll know more in a few days.

Can you give us a " read" on the prospects for Geoff Pope as a db for the Giants? I don't recall a reference to him in the season wrap-up issue. He played ( I think ) about 27 snaps in the Dallas playoff game. And there was no significant damage done against him. Did he "grade out" well in what he was asked to do, or were we just lucky? My understanding is that he has 4.29 speed in the forty. That is world class on a football field. I know that he played at Howard Univ., and believe he was free agent originally signed by Miami. Who had been tracking him in the Giants' organization....so that he was quietly signed to the Practice team? Anything you know will be appreciated. – Ted M.

Ted, I know very little about Pope right now – remember we’re not allowed to see the part of practice that counts during the season. I will probably be better able to answer your question after the spring football workouts.

I'm just happy that this year we wont have to hear the non stop complaining about not signing free agents if Reese decides not to make a splash. – Scott V.

Amen.

What is the status of James Butler ? I did not see him listed in your salary cap listing. Did he show some improvement in the last couple of games ? Keep up the great work! John – John G.

If a player isn’t on my salary cap spreadsheet, that means he’s unsigned.

February 26, 2008

Pat, I recently heard Michael Huff of the Raiders has been allowed to entertain trade offers. Do you foresee any interest there for the Giants? Picking him up would let us keep the talent we have at corner and address our real area of need in the secondary; safety. Plus he couldn't possibly cost as much trade or salary wise as the malcontent corner from Atlanta. – Joel Y.

Joel, don’t believe everything you hear. Trades don’t start till Friday – a lot can happen between now and then…

I think Sinorice Moss will be a late bloomer. He has been enigmatic and has had an unfortunate batch of injuries. However I really believe he can be an asset as a 4th receiver. His acceleration is superior and can be utilized in plays that New England run for Wes Welker...I'm in favor of DeAngelo Hall. Next to Ross and the rest of the depth chart, that would be an extremely appealing set of talent. Think our front 7 was good this year? Throw in Kiwanuka and imagine people getting swallowed alive and throwing desperation passes into the hands of Hall and Ross. – Jeff H.

I hope you’re right. Moss is a nice kid. I just wish he wasn’t so darn fragile.

February 25, 2008

Two thoughts. You've mentioned a few times that you think that the Giants will give Domenik Hixon a shot at being the 3rd WR next year. But what about Tyree? And I'm not just saying that for the SB catch. The fact is that every time the Giants have put him in he's produced. He's just always been lower on the depth chart cause folks like Moss & Tim Carter were drafted high.

I remember the last time they put him in for a full game at wide out was the last game of the 2004 season against Dallas and he caught everything that came his way. Granted, he may not have all of the tools of a star wide out, but what impresses me is the he catches the ball and that Eli has never been hesitant to throw to him in the few times they've let play.

Also, I hope the DeAngelo Hall only happens if his contract is done for a reasonable price, which I don't see happening. If we're looking for another corner I'd be fine with someone like Shawn Springs once the Skins cut him when they purge their cap. What we really need and you've mentioned it a bunch is a few good safeties. Otherwise, I don't see any glaring needs on this team. – Dave B.

Dave, I disagree about glaring needs for the team. I don’t want to get too deep into it now since I’m still developing material for the next issue, but there are at least two very glaring needs on this team that I’d be shocked if Reese doesn’t address this off-season.

As for receiver, my guess is that Michael Jennings doesn’t make it next year. The six receivers are Burress, Toomer, Hixon, Moss, Smith and Tyree. I love what Tyree brings to the table, but let’s be realistic: he’s limited as far as being a receiver goes. I’m still not convinced that the six guys I listed at receiver will all be on the roster come opening day, but we’ll see – a lot can happen between now and then.

As far as DeAngelo Hall is concerned, again I don’t want to jump too far ahead of myself here, but if I’m Reese, I take care of my core talent first before I look outside of the organization.

February 23, 2008

Here we go again! This is the time you trade Shockey, Moss and Lorenzen and our first round pick for DeAngelo Hall and Atlanta’s first pick in round 2. -- Steve S.

Steve and others. Please take note of the following …

  1. Shockey is NOT going to be traded. I don’t want to see another letter suggesting it because it’s not happening (and mind you, I’m of the opinion he should be moved out of here).
  2. You can’t trade an unrestricted free agent (Lorenzen) unless you sign him first. I am not sure that the Giants plan to resign him.
  3. Moss, from all indications, is not going to be traded, though I remain curious to see what they do with their receiver group, especially if the plan is to work Domenik Hixon into the mix.
  4. Lastly, before anyone goes proposing a trade, please have a viable replacement in mind for the position you’re trading. If, for example, you say trade Moss, have a replacement in mind. Don’t just propose trades for the sake of it.

I can't understand the Giants interest in trading for DeAngelo Hall. Not will Webster (unless they thought his play in the playoffs was a fluke), Ross, and Dockery playing well. In addition Madison should still be competent for one more year, I don't see the need to give up a first round pick for a loud mouth corner. I think that would be much better addressed through the draft. The problem in the secondary to me appears to be safety not corner, although I think they do need a young corner for depth and development. I truly hope that is a bogus rumor to make other teams (i.e. the eagles) to give up more than they wanted to in order to trade for Hall. – Brian B.

Brian, it’s likely that they plan to move one of those corners inside to safety. Also, Madison is not a long-term fixture here, so I’d think they’d look to replace him sooner than later (and I thought the guy held up well, mind you). Also for what it’s worth, the 31st pick is a borderline second rounder because of the way the talent in this year’s draft seems to be shaping up (plus you take a lower cap hit with your rookie pool if you come out of Round 1). So I wouldn’t be against the Giants trading out of the first round. Heck, I’d welcome it as it’s less time I have to spend at the draft that first day!

I realize you have said over and over that Shockey won't be traded...and I agree (though perhaps for different reasons). Nevertheless, I was delighted to hear of the Giants' reported interest in D'Angelo Hall and got to thinking that since Atlanta just released Alge Crumpler perhaps they might have some interest in a trade for Shockey? We, of course, would be getting an all-pro corner and kick returner while they would be getting an overrated, oft-injured all-pro. We'd obviously have to package either another player or perhaps our second round pick. Any chance? By the way, this isn't meant to be "Shockey bashing." I admire his spirit and toughness. He just doesn't fit on this team, mainly because of the choices he himself has made. – John K.

Please see my response to Steve S. Seriously guys, Shockey isn’t going to be traded this year. He can’t even pass a physical. So please, let’s not waste time even discussing the scenario.

Pat, I hate rumors because most of the time you get your hopes up for nothing, but if it is true about D Hall, I say DO IT!!! Can you imagine Spags' system and this defense with a shut down corner? – Chris H.

Chris, I hate rumors too. I hate having to chase them down, I hate having to report them and I hate how they affect the readers in this forum. That being said, let’s see how this plays out as no one can make any trades until Friday.

February 21, 2008

Any chance the Giants would make a play for Asante Samuel? – John F.

No.

Why can't Jim Fassel land a head coaching job? His name keeps coming up for consideration. He does the interview and then he gets rejected. What gives? – Joe Q.

You'd have to ask tghose teams he's interviewed with.

I was curious about the rumors of the Giants looking for a LT in Free Agency and/or the Draft and wanting to move Diehl back to LG. I know Diehl got beat a several times by quick pass rushers but I thought he did a pretty good job overall. I don’t usually jump on rumors but I have seen this from several sites and was curious if you knew if any of these rumors were true? – Brett T.

Brett, I don’t want to go too deep into the rumors because that’s an annual feature I save for subscribers, but I will say that I was never under the impression that Diehl would be the permanent left tackle. That being said, the giants did just win a super bowl with Diehl at left tackle, so I have to believe that the position isn’t of high interest right now.

February 20, 2008

Far be it from me to beat a thing to death BUT I don’t believe you are giving the greatest play in Super Bowl history its due! Catch 42 (or David & Eliath – Tyree’s favorite) is far from being “one of many” magic plays. It is the ONLY magic play and if we all lived to be a thousand it would never come again. This is the one Super Bowl play that can’t be coached, taught, practiced or duplicated and occurred with 1 minute left in the Super Bowl ….and that is why, dearest Pat, you simply must recognize and value the “Escape Catch” for the marvel it is……………but you didn’t hear that from me. -- Barry S.

Barry, c’mon. Give me a little credit here. For years people spoke about Bavaro’s carrying six 49ers on is back as magical, or the deflection of the pass only to be caught by McConkey as magical. No disrespect to David Tyree and his effort, but as I’ve said, it was one of many fantastic plays on what was a magical day for Giants nation. And to put all the attention on that one play, in my mind, takes away from the other contributions made by the other guys.

It's good to see the Giants coming close to extending Coughlin's contract. On a related note that has gotten much less coverage than Coughlin and Spagnuolo's status, what's going on with Gilbride? My understanding is that he was in the final year of his contract, which would run out a week or so after the Super Bowl. Was he quietly resigned, or did the Giants allow his contract to expire? – Joe K.

* * *

I've seen much about the new contract for Spags and the proposal for 4 more years for Tom Coughlin. What happened to Kevin Gilbride? His contract has expired as far as I know and he is certainly deserving of sharing in the Giants 2007 success. – Ray B.

Joe & Ray, I haven’t heard anything officially. I will check and see if I missed an announcement, but I would think that at this juncture, Gilbride was probably quietly renewed.

Pat, I totally agree with your assessment on Congress' investigation into Sports Ethics. But then again, since our stellar politicians have solved all other world problems, I suppose they have to occupy their time somehow right? – Bill D.

Amen brother!

February 19, 2008

After watching the Super Bowl for the third time, I saw Bradshaw and Jacobs on the field at the same time. How often did this happen and what were the results? Maybe its just my old eyes, but I don’t really see enough of the field from the TV view. Barry S.

I don’t know Barry. I’ve watched the game only one more time since coming home and to be honest, I don’t think I’m going to have time to watch it again for a while given that the scouting combines are starting up soon. And I don’t track personnel alignments as part of my stats work. Sorry. Maybe that will be something I’ll add to stats next season, though.

I am curious why the mainstream press refuses to post the real reason why Specter is pushing the NFL on this. The # 1 Contributor to his campaigns are the lawyers negotiating on behalf of Comcast Cable in a financial deal dispute with the NFL Network. Guess who the # 2 $$$ is? Yup you guessed it Comcast!!! Who should be investigating who? – Dana H.

Dana, when it comes to politics, I never did understand how they think. Personally, I have a problem with Congress getting involved with sports ethical matters.

Why did the official try to talk Belichick out of challenging the too many people on the field penalty, saying it was the official’s fault? – Randolph W.

Got me. The officials aren’t made available to the media unless there’s a special circumstance, and even then they’re only available to a pool reporter.

Looking at the salary cap schedule, it seems to me that a new contract for Manning would serve 2 good purposes, lock him up for 7 years and free up space to cover increases for Brandon Jacobs, etc. What do you think? – Bob G.

Truthfully Bob, I haven’t done any analysis of it. That’s coming up though – you guys are starting to get ahead of me a bit. <grin>

Thank you for your excellent Salary Cap spreadsheet feature. By far I think it’s probably the most complete item out there and I’d trust your information a lot more than some of the other sheets out there. I’m so glad I subscribed to Inside Football! On another subject, do you know when the G-men’s off-season program starts? – Vincent H.

Thanks Vincent, but as I said in my disclaimer, the salary cap spreadsheet is a draft as I still need to confirm a few more numbers – I’ve already began updating it.  So it’s going to be a work in progress for me all this off-season. The off-season program starts on March 31.

How much cap room will we have? Some sites show us at $24.75 under, not sure how accurate that is. If unsure, when will that number be released? Also, what needs do you think this teams needs to get better for next year? LB, Secondary. (Lance Briggs is available). I sure would like hard hitting safety. – Ryan C.

Ryan, please refer to the salary cap spreadsheet in the subscribers area. I haven’t given thought to the team’s needs as of yet as I want to see who else they resign before free agency starts.

The big pass play should have a simple name like THE HAPPY HOOKUP. If you want a supernatural element THE HOLY HOOKUP or THE HEAVENLY HOOKUP. – Harvey F.

I don’t know why there is such a big push to name the play. It is what it is: one of many that was just magic that da, though I suppose if I had to pick a name, I like “Catch 42.”

Read an article that aaid that the Giants blue print for success was the stock piling defensive ends/pass rushers. My understanding was that this was a by product of their overall philosophy of taking the best available talent on the board at the time of their pick. – John F.

It probably is a combination of the two.

My son who happens to be a huge Giant fan suggested: "Miracle on Grass" – Gary B.

Cute.

As I reflect on the season I am continually impressed with our GM. I read over the weekend that the Giants had $18.8 million in dead cap money in 2007. The bulk of that was Petigout, Arrington, Emmons and Demps. Reese dispatched the underperformers and cleaned up the cap for 08 while building a champion. We have money in 08 because he bit the bullet in 07. Smart stuff!

It will be interesting how he deals with Gibril Wilson and the other free agents. He seems to understand 'value' and that suggests Wilson is going to be overpaid in free agency by someone other than the Gmen. It will be interesting who we sign as (other teams)free agents. Reese may get some reasonably priced guys who want to play under Spagnola or with Eli. Playing for Coughlin may no longer be a deterrent. Lastly, the performance of the rookies in the playoffs suggests that Reese may continue to draft players who can ease into the starting lineup after an autumn of coaching ie, Boss, Bradshaw, Ross, Smith.

Anyway, kudos to Ernie for the Eli trade. Yes, Shawn Merriman was a great draft pick for San Diego...but, in the third round of that draft the Giants picked Justin Tuck...We did pretty well with Tuck. I argue that we used our picks to build our defense and Eli was the money player in the biggest game of his life. Thanks Mr Accorsi. It was a great season, Pat. Thanks for your thoughtful analysis. – Bill A.

Bill, I don’t think the dead cap figure is quite that high. In fact, I know that’s not the case...

February 16, 2008

Here's one for Barry S.. Since everyone wants to name "the play", how’s this one; Considering where it happened, and how Eli seemingly rose from the ashes to create, with Tyree, something new and spectacular, why not just call it, "The Phoenix"!!! – Joe K.

Nah… the game was played in Glendale.

Do the contracts of Kuehl and Joseph count against the salary cap? Also an observation; if as has been speculated, the team is disenchanted with Moss, that would leave the receiver section of the team very thin in that toomer and Burress are over 30 and only smith is young and sound. That would argue well for the first pick in the draft being a receiver. -- Steve s.

Steve, why wouldn’t those contracts count against the salary cap? Because of their injuries? Everything counts against the cap these days – teams don’t get exemptions, unfortunately.  And I disagree with the WR position being thin if they move Moss because you’re not counting Hixon into the mix (he’s going to get a look at that position). Also, figure they’ll probably draft another receiver probably in the mid to late rounds. I don’t think the first pick will be a receiver.

February 15, 2008

Just renewed my subscription a couple of days ago. Usually, I take care of this detail in December but I've been having such a ball reading the LTTE and the Message Board that I'd forgotten. First, kudos to you and the Inside Football staff for the best Giants coverage anywhere. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, along came the post-season coverage this year. Wow!

Lastly, you need to take some time off. Even a long weekend with your hubby at a nearby bed and breakfast can refresh the soul. Just make sure to leave your laptop and cell phone at home. We need you rested and refreshed for next season's run at SB XLIII. Excuse me, I've got to go watch the game again. ;-) – Burt D.

Burt, thank you for the feedback. It’s always nice to know that your hard work is appreciated by others (and trust me when I say I worked so hard that when I did get up to move around, I think my legs forgot how to work!

As for time off, no such luck I’m afraid. The combines are coming up next week and I’m also trying to finish the edits of the January issue, finish the commemorative book AND the salary cap spreadsheet. That’s a lot of stuff to do in addition to the other usual off-season stuff I take on. So no rest for the weary, I’m afraid, until the summer, just after the second mini camp.

I think Jim V. is right on the money about Troy Aikman’s bias against the Giants. Buck doesn’t bother me (his father was a lot better). I’ll take Chris Schenkel, Pat Summerall, and Phil Simms in the booth over any of em. -- Barry S.

I can’t really comment one way or another as I watch the tape without the sound in 90% of the cases.

It seems to me that in all the analysis of the Giants' season, people have ignored the amazing improvement of the special teams. Maybe they had little impact in the Super Bowl but that group was a huge boon along the way. I thought Coughlin's sticking with Tynes was a pig-headed move early in the year and didn't even think he deserved the job. But in the end, like a lot of Coughlin's decisions this year, he ended up being dead on. Tynes improved his kickoffs, stopped missing extra points and outside of Green Bay was the modicum of consistency. Kick return and even punt returning became weapons and we were never hurt by the other team's weapons. I am not sure what turned the group around but it they were pretty special this year. You do a good job of pointing out the key players in your write-ups week by week and deservedly so. Hopefully this is another area that we can maintain continuity, as hard as it is, for next season. – Jeff S.

Not to worry. The special teams improvement wasn’t lost on us.

I just finished reviewing the SB. I paused the tape for the beginning of "The Play." Some of you were wondering what WRs were on the field. As best as I could tell, Amani & Plax were split wide left and Tyree was split wide right. – Jim V.

Thanks Jim.

February 14, 2008

Pat, after my last letter regarding putting the franchise tag on Gibril, I did some research. The franchise tag for a safety is 4.4M. I do not know if Johnson is ready to start full-time, and even if he is, they could use an upgrade on Butler. With 20M in cap space, which can increase with a few cuts, why not put the tag on Wilson him this year to give Johnson another year to develop and then take over for Gibril? This is not supposed to be a strong draft class for safties, and the free agent market is not overly strong either, with most sites I've vistited saying Wilson is the best FA safety out there. I agree with you and don't think he is worth the money he is seeking and would not pay him, but for one year at 4.4M I don't think that is a bad option at all.  – Brian B.

Brian, as I have said so many times, the staff doesn’t view the personnel the way we do. I wouldn’t be shoicked if the staff thinks Johnson is a lot closer to starting htan you do.

First off, I can't thank you enopugh for the job you guys did on covering the playoffs. The detail you provide seldom is covered by the media and it makes your customers (and friends, btw)so much better informed. My question the other day about whether Toomer or Smith were out on the touchdownplays was interesting to me because they are 2 of the Giants top 3 receivers. I wonder what the thought process was on those critical plays. – Bob G.

Bob, I have to go back and look at my transcribed notes to see if Coughlin spoke about that play. I can’t do it right now unfortunately as I’m trying desperately to put a dent in the special Commemorative book we’re going to unveil which celebrates the 2007 season (I have a March 1 due date – nice of the publisher to spring this on me just a day ago, right?) If you remind me though later in the month, I’ll be happy to go back and see if I have anything about that play that wasn’t on my game film notes.

Regarding Jay H.’s letter and comment about naming the Manning to Tyree play of the game or what is properly being called by Steve Sabol, the Gold Standard, of NFL Films, the greatest play in Super Bowl history: as Sabol pointed out what sets this play above all the others is it’s a two parter, the Manning escape and the Tyree catch viewed separately, each would be a highlight for the ages, but put them together as one play with the timing and urgency and it does deserve special recognition as the greatest play in Super Bowl history. The Daily News ran a contest to name the play and had thousands of responses; here are the best ones: Catch 42 (the winning entry) The Hat Trick The TyReach The Immaculate Connection The Miracle on Third and Five The Dream Catcher The Cerebral Reception The Leap of Faith The Hel-Mary The Immac-Helmet Reception Perfectus Interruptus The Cranium Cradle David and Eliath The Crown Jewel The Hail Helmet The Head Mary The E.T. Connection The Escape Catch The Desert Classic The Fling for the Ring The Boston Strangler Shake and Take The Super Ball Clutch The Mannryree Miracle The Holy Flail The Eli-Maculate Ascension The Flee to Tyree The Catch In The Hat The Cheater Beater -- Barry S.

I call it a great play. Let’s leave it at that as I need my creativity for the commemorative book project I must get done before free agency consumes my life…

February 13, 2008

Just a note to thank you all for the great post-season coverage. There were many great plays, especially the Manning to Tyree pass. But, one play I just loved and have seen many times is the sack of Tom Brady by Jay Alford. Wow, did he bury him. I can't wait to see it again. – Don P.

And thank you for supporting our post season coverage. I had a blast running around and getting you guys the goods. J

I didn't notice this and maybe you did, were there 4 receivers on the Giants 2 touchdown passes or was Smith or Toomer not in on the plays? -- Bob G.

I believe I marked it on the game film notes in the playoff subscribers area.

The actual name of the play in the giant's playbook is "Phantom." Turns out it was a busted play and Tyree came back to help Eli. I've heard it called "The Hail Manning."  -- John F.

I call it a great play.

I have to say that I'm still in shock. I know it's real, I watched it on tv, I went to the parade, but this just seems so surreal. I'm curious if you think this is exclusive to Giants fans or if we really did witness something extraordinary? – Brian F.

Why is everyone still in shock? Seriously, you guys complained throughout the year when they looked like garbage, so now they go and put together a string of impressive football and it’s a shock that you can’t believe? I think it’s time we all go over the shock and accept reality.

I disagree about Richard's take on our RB's. We all saw Bradshaw's pure speed, explosiveness and determination. And to see him ambush into Ty Warren (300 lbs?), that's true raw power. When he starts pass blocking and getting more carries, he's going to be an out of this world playmaker. As far as Jacobs goes, I'm not crazy about his acceleration, but nobody can argue with 5 yards a carry on 200 carries as well as his pass blocking talent. And then there is Ward (F/A), who is underrated and could easily start on half a dozen teams. Add to that a good blocking front. Our RB's aren't one trick ponies. They can all produce when called upon. – Jeff H.

Good points, Jeff.

This off season will be very interesting to say the least. At this moment I am emotionally spent as a Giant fan, but that's a good thing. I gave everything I could as a fan and I am drained. It feels so good to say that we beat the best team the NFL had to offer (actually there not, we beat them so were the best). I think it would be a wrong move to trade Shockey, I cant wait to see what Gilbride has up his sleeve with Boss/Shockey out there on the field. However I do think the Giants should grab a WR in the 1st round of the draft or via FA. There's word out of Detroit that the Lions are looking to shop Roy Williams. Like I said in the beginning of this letter the off season will be interesting. -- Dom M.

Thanks Dom.

The Giants have resigned Tynes and Feagles...They must resign Gibril Wilson! He is such a major player, he hits hard and flies to the ball, what are the odds of him staying? – Steve M.

I’m not very optimistic of this happening, Steve.

February 12, 2008

Prediction: Aaron Ross makes the pro bowl next year. – John F.

<grin>

Everywhere I look or listen, people are trying to name the play with Eli and Tyree. I was wondering what was you take on naming this play, if it should have a name at all? – Jay H.

To be completely honest,  I could care less what it’s called. It’s just one of several great plays that were made in that game so why give all the glory to that one reception?

I think it is time to thank you Pat for making IF into something akin to a family affair where the cousins, aunts and uncles are able to talk on a common basis.

Now to get down to business, this has been probably the most exciting year I have had as a Giant fan in the fifty+ years. I remember when I was able to get tickets 2 weeks before the home opener on the thirty yard line. I was at the game in Tampa when Norwood missed the field goal. So am I happy? Yes but I would like to remind everyone that last year Eli would bring the team back in the last quarter only to have the defense give up the winning touchdown or field goal and lose.

The script seemed to be the same except this is a new year and a new Eli so the result was different. The same thing happened in the first half when the Giants scored and the Pats followed with a TD. So twice the Giants scored and twice the Pats answered right back. The defense was GREAT but something seems to happen right after the offense scores. Anybody know why? Thanks for hearing me out. – Myron S.

Thank you Myron, for the kudos – I might not always agree with you guys, but you are family, at least that’s how I see it. I’m not sure what you’re asking though there at the end. Whatever happened, the chips fell on the Giants’ side. Let’s not question it.

I just have to put in my two cents about Mike M's complaint about the broadcasting. I agree with Mike that Buck is just awful. Having said that, the "ranking" of broadcasters is really very personal. But, I'll go further anyway. Buck's partner, Aikman is, I think, technially capable. But, he continues to carry a somewhat anti-Giants bias. He didn't really say too much in praise of them until very deep into the playoffs. And, you could really tell he felt the Cowboy loss badly. Just for me, I liked the Moose & the Goose along with Albert. We had them for many of our games and they were fun to listen to. On top of that, they gave the Giants a fair break; not like Buck & Aikman. – Jim V.

I forgot about Moose (but I could so without Goose to be honest).

Well I have to give TC his do even though I still can't stand the guy. He certainly did an excellent coaching job both motivationally and strategically in the playoffs. I no I have been anti TC since the day he was hired but winning is winning and he is a winner. I have to accept him but I don't him. I noted several people have commented on areas for improvement. One I feel is absolutely critical is running back. I know many think that’s a strength but it's not. All our running backs missed several games each except RD who is really not effective in that position anymore. Two, Ward and Jacobs have been hurt every year. I look forward to your final 2007 issue and future draft issue to see what you think.  – Richard W.

Thanks Richard. I hope to get the February issue (the 2007 season wrap up issue) out by the weekend.

You guys did a great job with you're coverage this year! Keep up the great work! Of the features I loved is the game film review. The notes you guys take are awesome. Starting with the New England regular season game, I re-watched each game with you're notes, and I picked up a lot of stuff. Do you have a super Bowl game film review? Thanks. -- Tim M.

Thanks for the feedback Tim. I forgot to link the Super Bowl game review amidst all the celebrations and my trying to finally file expense reports for the month of January! Anyway, it’s in the playoff area.

February 11, 2008
I can't say enough about the terrific coverage we are lucky to get from Pat and everyone else at insidefootball.com. Thanks, you deserve championship rings of your own.

Two things for today -- 1. Incredible that the entire staff did pick Big Blue to win the super bowl days before the game.

2. How right was Pat all along never wavering in her consistent retort to all of us fans about how the Giants view their personnel differently than we all do?

It is great to hear us all come out and admit we were wrong about this guy or that guy, but recalling throughout the season how Inside Football covered every up and down gives you a lot of confidence in this being the one and only stop for terrific coverage of our favorite team as we set out to move forward from this historic and pleasurable achievement. Thanks. – Chris W.

Wow Chris, thanks so much for the kudos. I am glad you enjoyed our coverage. As hard as we all worked, I have to admit I had a lot of fun and of course the Super Bowl win made it all worth while.

For those of you who missed it, we’re extending the availability of our playoff coverage through the end of February, which means you can still sign up and get access to all of the material we published, including several features I can pretty much guarantee you no one else thought to do. <grin>

Still living in a dream over here. keep reliving the game, esp the tyree catch and burress TD over and over in my head. I must say I had day dreamed the week before the SB about how the Giants would win in the last seconds, and a fade to Burress in the end zone was the one i kept dreaming would happen. Wasnt till the next day i realized my day dreams came true, amazing (maybe that Burress catch against Philly few yrs ago had seeped into my subconcious)

My question is what do you think of Joe Buck's call of the game, especially the Tyree catch? There was an article in the Star-Ledger before the SB that talked about Buck had an anti-NY bias. Never really bought into it, but i must say his call of the Tyree play was unusually blase. I mean you just witnessed perhaps the greatest play in the history of the SB, and his call did not have an ounce of excitement or amazement in it at all. And his call didn't sound like disbelief either. And overall i felt his broadcasting was subpar and not too thrilled with the Giants win. (his call of Manning downing the ball at the end was kind of lame too) Don't know about you guys, but I'd take Gus Johnson over Buck any day. Obviously it doesn't truly matter, we're still the champs, but just musing. Anyone else feel Buck's broadcasting was lame?

In response to Jeff H.'s letter regarding FA and the Draft, alot of move depend on if Strahan decides to retire. If he does I think Kiwanuka should be used like Tuck was this season, placed on the line and start at LB. I think Mitchell should be resigned for one more year in order to shape a starter for next year, either Wilkinson, a draftee (hopelly D. Connor) or maybe even DeOssie.

Saftey definetly needs to be addressed especially if Wilson isn't resigned, which I hope he will. CB seems O.K. maybe grab a young player in FA or draft one later. The O-Line is awesome but I think it needs some depth. Reciever seems O.K. hopefully we draft one early or sign one. And finally I hope Ward is resigned, with the injuries we had this year, depth in the backfield is a must. --Mike M.

Mike, I don’t pay attention to the broadcasters unless sit’s Aikman or Simms. The others are nothing but hot air, in my opinion. Anyway, regarding free agency and roster moves, I have a few thoughts I’m going to put out there in a week or so once we fire up the off-season rumors and musings. Some of the grumblings I’m hearing might shock several of you, but in looking at them, I think it’s going to be for the best.

WOW!! i AM STILL ON CLOUD NINE! IT IS TIME TO LOOK FORWARD TO THE OFFSEASON. YES THE GIANTS MAY BE IN A GOOD CAP SITUATION, BUT THE KEY OFFSEASON MOVE HAS ALREADY BEN MADE. THANKS SPAGS!!! MY OFSEASON WISH LIST IS SAFETY, DT, AND WR. – Chris H.

WHAT DID YOU SAY? <wink>

February 9, 2008

I'm still trying to peel my wide open jaw off the ground! Just came out of a medically confirmed shock (I looked like Ferris Bueller's friend Cameron Frye...)! And, just when you thought it could never get any better, it does, because Spags is staying!!

Now, I'm waiting for Tiki to get fired from his analyst position, since he has shown to have little judgment and no credibility, and I don't think the network would wait the 5 years it is going to take to remove all that egg off his face. I have just a few questions: 1). Why wasn't Burress and Shockey at the parade? 2). Why haven't they published (or obtained) any comments about this season from the Giants greats such as Simms, Carson, Taylor, Martin, Gifford, Huff, Robustelli, etc..? – Gary D.

I dunno Gary. Maybe Plax and Shockey caught wind of your suggestion earlier in the ear that both be traded(sorry, I couldn’t resist – but not to worry… I was wrong about Webster, so it’s all in good fun). Why get quotes from Giants greats of yesteryear? This is all about the 2007 team. Let them have their moment in the sun, just like the 86 and 90 teams had their moments in the sun.

Ok, this is a bit farfetched, but: How about trading Shockey and the #1 pick this year to the Titans for Albert Haynesworth? Our Defensive front would get freakishly scary and Vince Young & The Titans could really use the help. – Lance Z.

Repeat after me: Shockey is not going to be traded. For anyone.

How stupid am I to have complained about Coughlin being too forthcoming about injuries? I'd say pretty stupid, as it was so minor it should have never been raised. Dockery may be a promising corner, Pat, as you pointed out, but corner should be a priority in the draft or free agency. With Madison possibly done, is he ready to step in full-time?

Also, WR, as Burress and Smith both had injuries issues this year and Toomer can't go on forever, should also be a focus, as we can officially declare Sinorice Moss done. And just what does everyone think they would get for Shockey? Maybe a 3rd round pick at best. In my eyes, the guy is way too talented and I don't buy the thought that it helped Eli to have him not on the field.

Plus, I still say that Gilbride needs to send him deeper down the middle more, especially if Burress/Smith are healthy and doing their thing to attract coverage. Unless Boss becomes one heck of a blocker, he doesn't come close to what Shockey can do. – Mark S.

Too soon to say Mark. To be honest, I haven’t really done the year end reviews.

First, kudos to you, Pat, and the entire IF crew for a job done extremely well. What a year! I want to comment on Spags deciding to stay with the Giants next year. I think this is an extremely good sign for the Giants, as they can all look forward to having him around next year to make our defense even better. With the coaching staff remaining in place, the Giants are in particularly good shape as we head into the new season.

As for Shockey, I can't really understand the trade talk. What could we possibly expect to get for him? What would anyone give up for a guy with high salary demands, who gets injured every season, and won't practice with his QB during the off-season. I'm all in favor of shopping him around, but I just can't imagine getting anything for him. One way or another, though, I can't see him as part of our team any longer. Can you? – John K.

John, it’s a moot point. Shockey is not going to be traded. Seriously, I don’t know why a number of you guys seem to think this is going to happen. It’s not, at least not this year. If anything, the personnel moves they will likely make will shock a few of you but if they do indeed happen, they’ll make sense (and I have explanations all lined up if Jerry Reese does pull the trigger). Shockey is not going to be one of those moves.

February 8, 2008

OK. You asked for it. Time to "own up," I was at the top of the list among those who hated the deal Ernie made for Eli, at the time of that draft. I thought we wouldn't recover for a decade....I was more dismayed by the "unnecessary " picks we gave up than I was on the issue of whether Eili would or would not ever develop into the superstar required by the price.

At the time, I strongly disagreed with Ernie about his philosophy ( " defense doesn't win championships ") . I still disagree with him on that one. And I felt we needed more defensive players than we had at the time. And, certainly, Ben R. seemed a fine value ( or Rivers ) without having to yield any draft picks.

In any case, in my book, Ernie has been proven correct and I am thrilled to have Eli. I will eat all needed crow forever, given how he has developed. This run , beginning with the NE home game, has been thrilling. I've been a fan since the early 1960s, so I have seen a lot of Giants' history. This season was the best ever....beating Tampa ( NFL's top defense ) at Tampa; humiliating Dallas in dallas; and the classic NFC championship game at GB. Winning the SB still seems more fantasy than fact, particularly as I re-watch that last Manning drive.

I also admit to wanting TC replaced, and being disappointed ( though not surprised ) when he was retained at the end of last season. I was in the camp of people who was certain TC would not/could not change.

Wrong again. I have said it before; I am happy to throw myself on the pyres of humiliation ( misjudging TC; the Eli deal, etc ) for having one season such as this one. I now have learned the following lessons:

1. I know nothing about accurately predicting the skill sets and future record of any NFL team ( particularly the Giants ).

2. I am totally confident in Jerry Reese, and can't wait to see the decisions/changes he puts in place to lead us into 2008/2009. 3. We have a chance to be a dominant team for several years ( Hope I don't have to eat crow on this prediction). – Ted M.

It’s okay Ted. I have all the respect in the world for those of you who are coming forward to admit you were wrong. Heck, I admitted I was wrong as well on certain things. That’s what makes us all human. I’m just thrilled that eli came through – I never really waned in my belief he could, but I also thought that if he came up empty this year, the time would come to start putting some pressure on the kid.

just finishing happily eating my words about eli.if he never wins another playoff game this run will stamp him as a legend in ny sports annals. for 5 games he played like a hall of famer. do i expect he will play this way every game? no- but hopefully he has turned that confidence corner and will stay a top flight qb for some time.

it was also nice to see corey webster jump start his career. and you are right, shockey should not be villified but trading him might be better for both sides. he has always given his best (as did tiki) and that's all you can ask for, but sometimes the parts don't fit and another location might be better for him and the giants. hope by the time you get this spags has turned down the redskins and stays for one more year at least. – Ron S.

See above Ron. I think this is one time a lot of us were happy to be proven wrong.

It’s truly amazing how well the Giants performed in the Second Season. As one newspaper put it, the Giants played better after every playoff game. They played better against the Patriots than they did against the Packers; better against the Packers than they did against the Cowboys, and better against the Cowboys that they did against Tampa Bay. It would be frightening to see how well they would play next week! …….actually, there is a game this week and if the powers that be would let the Giants play the AFC Pro Bowl team, the Giants would win that one too!

I’ve been relishing the ‘Afterglow’ of the Superbowl win; I can’t get enough of hearing and reading and watching replays and comments about the great New York Football Giants. I will say that after watching the NFL Network, ESPN, reading the newspapers etc. – nothing comes close to telling it like it is than Inside Football; thank you Pat, the Super bowl review was great. -- Barry S.

Thanks for the kind words Barry. I have to admit I had loads of fun with the Super bowl issue and I absolutely LOVED how the “Born to Be Giants” piece came out (I don’t pat myself on the back much, but I think that was one of my most brilliant story ideas of the post season and no one else had it to my knowledge!) But if it’s okay, I’m going to skip the Pro Bowl. Actually I have to watch the Super Bowl tape again (which I don’t mind doing – I just need to carve out the time).

I have mixed feelings about Shockey. But, I'm hoping this season may turn him into a more humble player...I hope we move Kiwi back into the DE rotation. I like the way Torbor (FA) filled in...I think we should shoot for a slightly better back-up QB in the offseason...If we re-sign Ward we'll have a terrific backfield...I say we target a corner to develop near the 2nd round, so by 2009 we have Ross, Webster and a promising youngster. I wouldn't be surprised if we also go after a young center to develop. – Jeff H.

Jeff, you seem to forget about Dockery, who’s a promising young corner. And O’Hara is still relatively young – I think a new center is a need that’s still about two or three years away. I’d like to see them beef up at safety and defensive tackle, though.

As a long time Giants fan I have always held fast to the motto "expect a loss, hope for a win". That motto held true until this year. Sports always bring ups and downs, that is what makes watching them so great. If everything was 'predictable' then why would we watch? With that said, I am never, ever going to expect or predict anything with regards to the Giants (nor be cynical). This team reminded me why I watch, why I could always shed the tough losses (SF 2002, Minn. 97, SB 2000 come to mind amongst others); because as a fan you MIGHT, if you are lucky, get to experience what we all just did.

I also hope that Giants fans learn a little patience and DO NOT BOO THEIR TEAM AT HOME! I always hated booing, and especially if they were down at the half. I am a New Yorker and I understand the mentality but seriously. That just needs to stop. Booing should be reserved for egregious circumstances. Lastly, I hope Tiki enjoyed sweeping up City Hall after the parade. He really 'earned' that job. (Just kidding!) – Bill D.

Amen Bill. Say what you want about this Giants team, but I can tell you for certain that they gave it their all EVERY game, and it was embarrassing to hear the home crowd boo them.

What great news about Spags staying with the giants at least for another year(maybe more). You have to know that he made the difference why the defense came up so big this year. It was almost the same personnel as last year but he knew how to use them and in what situations. I know the DBs played better this year also but the aggressiveness of the defensive front made their job a bit easier. If there is more improvement in the DBs its going to be an awesome defense to deal with. Love it. Frank A.

Frank, to be honest, I never for a second thought Spags would go to Washington. The move made no sense on so many levels, and Spags is a smart man to know that he’d be walking into a hornet’s nest. Personally I hope Fassel gets the job down there.

I haven't written since the SB because I have been waiting to wake up. Hasn't happened yet, so I'm around 73% sure this actually happened. Of course I am happy for the guys like Strahan, Toomer and Feagles, but this is the best for one guy: Eli Manning. People around the country don't realize, but New York fans are different. Eli will never throw 40 TDs a season (actually, who knows), but nothing matters at this point. If you win 1 championship for New York fans, that's it. You're a legend.

Eli Manning is a legend. So long as he maintains an alright career and doesn't retire in two years, Eli made everything given up worth it and then some. I am not unrealistic and I think he will absolutely have terrible games in the future. Everyone does. But everyone now knows, that when the game REALLY matters, when the biggest stakes imaginable are on the line, number 10 can deliver. This is amazing. – Dan D.

Dan this is amazing. I still can’t believe it, even though all the tea leaves pointed to this happening. And as I have said before, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer group of hardworking guys.

Wow, so good to hear that Spags is staying for at least one more year. I can't believe reportedly that Snyder didn't even offer him the job. I don't know why anyone would want to coach for him. I'll admit I was wrong about Coughlin but I've always supported Eli and I was so proud wearing his jersey Sunday night. How about that QB class with Eli, Rivers, and Roethlisberger now? My question is when do you think we'll hear from Strahan on whether he'll return? Do you think he'll wait until training camp to make a decision again? He definitely has gas left in the tank and is still a valuable asset to this team and I would love to see him out there again. Thanks Pat!  -- Adam S.

Adam, Strahan is supposed to be informing the Giants of his plans by March.

After much thought, I renewed my subscription today. Before clicking "confirm" I realized that the Giants are undefeated since my 2007 subscription ran out. This may be a mistake! I thought maybe I should subscribe to the off-season only. The off-season issues are all that I really want anyway, but you give the regular season away for just over a dollar an issue above the off-season subscription rate. So it is a bargain (as long as the Giants win). I bit on the full season subscription in spite of my superstitious fears. Hopefully I will not be blaming myself if the Giants lose a game next season. :o) -- Steve S.

Um, thanks Steve? ;)

I guess I wasn't clear when I asked why Tyree was on the field for THE catch and the TD? Did they have 4 wideouts? If not, who among Toomer, Burress, and Smith were sitting out at these 2 momentous moments? -- Mark E.

Mark, I haven’t gotten to watching the tape again so I don’t know the answer.

Random Thoughts:

• The Giants Playoff run was 4 games decided by a total of 20 points. The last 3 games by 10 points. I’m thinking both might be record lows, especially 10 points for the final 3 rounds. Of course the G-Men of ’90 won the Super by 1, and the NFC by 2 points, but they killed the Bears that year in round 1.

 • The Osi Holdout watch begins.

 • I trust Reese to do right, but contracts after Championships are tough. For example, Wilson probably isn’t worth the money he’ll command, but we’re thin at safety and this is a poor draft year (supposedly) for them. Do you think McQuarters could handle playing there full time next year?

 • Worst Coaching jobs: Tier 1 = Oakland, Atlanta; Tier 2 = Detroit, Cincinnati, Washington. Spags did the right thing, Snyder tires of his coaches quickly. All the other jobs have something good going for them.

• Maybe Eli will get some speaking parts in commercials now!

It never occurred to me in prior years, but since the Giants had 4 extra games, and so many rookies, it's like a college team getting a month of extra practices for a New Years Day bowl. Think of Bradshaw, Boss, & especially Smith - none of them really contributed much until the last 6 games (including playoffs). So instead of a lost season for Smith, he and the others come in as true veterans next year. That's a great playoff run bonus! – Steve C.

Thanks Steve.

Sally Jenkins wrote a striking article in the Washington Post essentially saying Steve Spagnuolo should stay in NY and enjoy the Giants' superb owners and GM. Glad he "took her advice" (wonder whether Snyder will try to ban her from Redskins Park). – Alan B.

Alan, anyone with half of a brain knew that the Redskins job isn’t attractive – a head coach should be allowed to hire his own assistants, not inherit a staff. If Fassel takes it, my guess is it will be just to get his feet back on the ground.

Spaggz is coming home folks! It feels so reassuring to know that. He deserves every million he gets. I would like to see him take over as HC in the future and I think that's what this organization intends to do. Spaggz has been such a great addition to this team. He's turned C.Webster's career around, we all thought he was a bust including myself. If he can do that with Webster than I truly believe that he can do that with guys like Butler and other players. Well I'm glad that this matter is out of the way. Now the Giants can concentrate on what they need to do to continue to bring championships to New York. -- Dom M.

Thanks Dom.

February 7, 2008
All I have to say is, "he's no Phil Simms......he's Eli Manning!!!!!" – Joe K.

Amen.

I stumbled upon this article from the NY Times from 1995. Its a must read. It talks about 2 of the bright spots from the middle of the 95 season. Their 2 defensive ends who were going to be the future stars of their defensive line. One of the them, who the reporter of the article, calls "a product of good drafting" was 6th round pick Jamal Duff. After 5 sacks in 1995, he went on to miss the entire 1996 season and played in 13 games both 1997 & 98 for the Redskins totaling a total of 5 sacks in those 26 last remaining games. He was out of the league and later starred as Me Shell in The Dodgeball Movie with Vince Vaughn & Ben Stiller.

The other end in the article, who was quoted as saying in it "I don't even know if I'll be here next year. The way things go now in the league, you don't know where anyone will be. But we have a lot of good players here and Duff has been playing extremely well. I definitely see him here in the future at one of the end spots. That's almost a given." His name is Team Captain, Super Bowl champion Michael Strahan who has 128.5 sacks since that 1995 season. Its a good thing the GMEN held on to the right one. – Scott V.

Wow, talk about a blast from the past!

Do you think Reese will franchise tag Gibril? To me it makes perfect sense. Its considered a weak draft for safeties and we have the cap room to absorb that kind of cap hit for one year. It will also give Johnson another year to develop as to me he and Wilson are very similar style players. Safety is already a weak point on this team with Butler, to have he a Johnson the entire season is very risky in my opinion.

I admit I do not know what free agent safeties are out there. I was also surprised to hear Ward might be resigned, only because I figured he'd try to be a starter somewhere, might be too much money, and is way too injury prone. He is a good player when healthy but he would be the third string back here, and I would have thought he would want a better opportunity somewhere else and we would use a mid to late round draft pick to replace him. – Brian B.

No, and to be honest, I think the idea makes zero sense. Wilson is good, but he’s not worth a salary equivalent to the top five safeties in the league.

Well, I was dead wrong about Coach C. And I was dead wrong about Plaxico. Not wrong regards talent....I knew he had that, and more, from the moment I saw him play at Mich St. I was wrong about his character. Oh, man was I wrong there. And I was wrong about Kevin G. He turned out to be a great OC. Well, at least i was right about something, Eli. I don't care....I'm more than happy to have been proven wrong. At the risk of being wrong once again, and at the risk of sounding a sour note, I do think Shockey should be traded. Not scapegoated. Just traded. I have a hunch it will be better for all concerned. – Jon C.

Jon, I agree about moving Shockey out of here, especially if Gilbride comes back as offensive coordinator.

pontification time before i get to my question: just want to make a few points on this magical season:

1) as fans we can't be more delighted to be champions again but this is about the players. they wanted and wanted it bad. they deserve it. it's all on you guys well done!

2) i couldn't be happier for guys like Michael Strahan and Jeff Feagles. what a terrific way to put a stamp on your long careers.

 3. i can't help but wonder the emotions that archie manning and his wife must be going through. to have 2 sons win back to back super bowl mvps. that is incredible. i almost cried when my 2 year old got accepted to the nursery school we hoping to get her in i can only imagine what this must feel like.

4) i think the future looks very bright for this team. this the first time i feel like going into the draft and free agency there are no glaring weaknesses at any position. what a job by jerry reese ... in his first year!

5) lastly i just want to say again what an outstanding job this publication does throughout the year. i am proud to say i am now a full time subscriber!

now for my question: i don't think i'm the only guy bringing this up but what are the chances the giants look to deal jeremy shockey in the offseason and what do you think they could get for him? he is still a very valuable player in this league despite coming off a broken leg. it just seems the offense works a lot better without him than with him and i'm very high on kevin boss as a blocker and a receiver. – Steve M.

Steve first, thank you for your kind words about our publication. Having ome home from Phoenix with two very sopre wrists and fearful I might need surgery (I don’t y the way), I am glad that all the work we did over the super bowl and the playoffs was appreciated.

As for Shockey, this is a topic I’m going to be exploring in an upcoming issue as you have to look at the bigger picture rather than just isolating one player. So if you’ll be patient with me, I promise I’ll have a thought-provoking argument on whether it makes sense to trade him or not.

Can you tell us why Tyree was on the field for THE catch and also the TD? They rarely play 4 wideouts. Who was sitting out at these 2 momentous moments? -- Mark E.

Sinorice Moss was inactive. And let’s be honest. Who amongst us thought that Manning would even glance at Tyree let alone throw to him? Really it was a brilliant strategy.

in this incredible saga, the most impressive item to me was the play of corey webster from the buffalo game on .over a 6 game span he was entrustef with the coverage of t.o.,driver and moss had interceptions and tackles and i could not beleive his speed against moss on that last play.not only was this season saving but it may have totally altered the giants post seaon plans regards. -- Steve S.

I agree Steve. I had Webster dead and buried. Shows you how much I know, right?

By the way, Steve S. is looking for VHS copies of the Giants’ playoff games. He is willing to reimburse for the cost of materials and postage. If anyone can help him out, please let me know and I’ll put you in touch with him.

P.S. from Pat. Subscribers know I wrote about the circus of media day in the post game Super Bowl issue as being one of the things I didn’t like. Anyway, someone was kind enough to send me a link to a video which, after viewing in its entirety, had me thinking I got it wrong.

The video in question is Kellie Pickler’s report for the Tonight Show (not Entertainment Tonight). While I still find the young lady to be highly annoying (goes back to her days on American Idol), whoever wrote the script for this video did one heckuva job.

Hi Pat, Maybe I missed it but I don't remember Plax's name being called for a key to NYC. -- Phil G.

He wasn’t called. I’m guessing he stayed behind to receive treatment as on the floats, the players had to stand and that’s probably not a great idea
