MARCH 2008 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

March 25, 2008

Like a lot of other fans I wanted to see a big name signed in free agency, but as time passed I realized the wisdom by our management. We know when to pull the trigger and this year isn't it. DeAngelo Hall is trouble and a me-first guy and eventually will cause a disruption for the Raiders. By the way he's a talent but I've seen him burnt heads up at least a half a dozen times by guys he claims he's so much better than. There is no reason guys like Ross and Webster can't continue to grow and excel and let our d-line just cause havoc. With or without Strahan, we are fine. Tuck is a beast and a healthy Kiwanuka will make this a top five D. In the end, free agency is fun but overrated when you're spending ten million on a guy who won't stop parking in the handicap spot like Hall. Forget him and enjoy what we have. A Super Bowl champ with a new level of confidence we haven't seen since Taylor and Simms. – Jeff C.

Amen Jeff!

Seubert extended through 2012! This is awesome. Beyond being a very solid player, Rich seems like a really great guy and a very positive influence on the other players. And to be able to play again after what he went through with his injury is nothing short of miraculous. Kudos to the Giants for extending him. This is a great story. – Scott M.

I agree Scott. Seubert is a fantastic human being and a true throwback type of player.

March 24, 2008

David Carr appears to be a fine, young family man and solid citizen in the locker room. However, last year with the Panthers, before being injured, he held the ball for to long (couldn't see the field?), often threw into double coverage and easily fumbled. The Panther's did not have a strong team in '07, however, an untested rookie replaced Carr and was very successful in moving the offense. Hopefully the Giants will make an early call regarding Carr and his value as a back-up ,if needed. My feeling is the best insurance policy for a QB is the offensive, line starting with the LT. As matters now stand, the Giant's offense would likely flop without Manning. This said, Pat do you feel that Diehl is the answer that we need moving forward? Another question what percentage of '07 sacks were charged to Diehl? While the simple answer to these questions is "we won the Super Bowl with Diehl" -- the trailing questions are--do we need a better insurance policy at LT and do we have a QB replacement if Manning goes down? -- Larry O.

Larry, I think once Carr gets behind a good offensive line, he’ll get his confidence back. Of course, let’s hope that doesn’t mean that Eli has to miss a significant amount of time.

At the 31st pick, you can most likely rule out CB's McKelvin, Cromartie, or Jenkins, and Safeties Phillips and Smith as all will be off the board. In my opinion, no one else at CB, S, or any OLB is first round worthy talent in 2008. It would therefore make sense to do one of the following two options: 1). Either trade out of the first round, or 2). Draft for depth at specific key positions OTHER THAN backfield, such as MLB, OL, or DT, using the next best talent available principle. Draft Conclusion: trade out of the first round, or strongly consider MLB Dan Connor. I think Pierce needs depth behind him. He can't be expected to do it all again and he's aging. Pierce has no real proven help on the outside (OLB's) for 2008. Also, Pierce's play would be optimized if allowed to be relieved more often. Blackburn is reliable but lacks true starter impact. Therefore, Dan Connnor is both the next best talent available at pick #31, and fills a true depth need. He will prove valuable when providing that much needed depth at the critical MLB position. Because, if Pierce goes down with injury for any period of time, or sucks wind too often, the defense will be porous. Furthermore, he will need more help since the jury is still out on Kiwi playing OLB, and Wilkinson, DeOssie too new and unproven to hold the LB corps. As for Clark, who knows. DB's can be filled in nicely during 2nd and 3rd rounds where appropriate talent will be justified at that point. Therefore, MLB is the biggest need in round #1 and Dan Connor is the guy. – Gary D.

Gary, when it comes to the pre-draft stuff, I have very little interest. There are too many prospects to scout and I’d much rather wait to see who the Giants pick and report on those prospects once they come into camp than speculate who they’ll take.

Well now it makes sense why the Giants didn’t get D. Hall, I mean 10 mil a year for 7 years which he'll probably play there for 4 years and then want another trade. Way to much money for the headaches he would've caused. This has me thinking one thing though. If we couldn’t land a CB in free agency does that mean that will be what this team is looking for in the 1st round. -- Dom M.

Would I lie to you guys?

Do the Giants have any interest in Ty Law? – Chris H.

No.

I see that the Giants are raising ticket prices again - big surprise! My family has had Giants tickets since they played at the Polo Grounds. Have you heard anything about what they plan to do with respect to seat allocation and pricing at the new stadium? I've heard a lot of rumors. – Ernest B.

I’ve hear d a lot of rumors too, Ernest. To be honest, I’m not worrying about it right now as it’s still at least two years away. But I know my family, which has had season tickets for over 40 years, is bracing for the worst case scenario.

Just finished your March issue. It was excellent; but I have one disagreement but I am sure that J.R. will have the final word. I feel that there is more need at w.r. than is apparent Burress is 30 but he will be fine, Smith has a chance to be a great receiver but Amani is 34 and after that are a lot of ifs. No one has mentioned London who spent the whole year on the practice squad. I would guess that there will be w.r taken, one on each day. -- Steve s.

Steve, don’t discount Domenik Hixon. As you mentioned, there are a lot of unknowns; just because you and I might not be familiar with the unknowns doesn’t mean they can’t compete for and win a job. That being said, I do think a receiver will be taken, but I’d be surprised if one is taken on day one.

Any truth to the Mel Kiper suggestion/mock draft that the giants will take this S from Miami by the last name of Phillips? – Anthony D.

Anthony, it’s too early to begin speculating for the draft. I strongly advise you not believe everything you hear or read. Things will start to heat up about a week before the draft; until such time, right now everything is speculation. P.S. this is why I have very little interest in the pre-draft stuff. I’d much rather wait until the Giants get their guys on board and see how they do in the mini camps and training camp.

March 19, 2008

In reply: You're right as much as I want Hall he isn't worth $10M especially if it costs us cap $ to retain our core producers such as Jacobs and Snee. I still think Belichick is a top football brain who was a big part of our Super Bowls but really enjoy that we beat such a top football brain. Alan C.

Alan, I’m glad to hear you say that. Trust me when I say the Giants aren’t a cheap organization – far from it. There are NFL teams out there that define the word “cheap” – the Giants are definitely not one of them. As for Belichick, ever since “Spy Gate,” I really question the success he’s had. I think that scandal has forever tarnished his legacy.

I have a few statements and questions regarding the off-season. First of all I understand letting Torbor and Wilson go without much thought, Torbor could never be a solid starter and Wilson was demanding way too much money. However, I do think losing Mitchells toughness will hurt, but I believe Wilkinson is much more athletic and they drafted him for a reason.

The signings of David Carr, Danny Clark, and Sammy Knight are solid, but I really still think the Giants defense lacks that cockiness, especially now that they lost Gibril Wilson, Mitchell, and who knows if Strahan is coming back. That is why I really don't understand why the Giants didn't pull the trigger on the D-Hall deal. Their offer was much better than Oakland’s and I heard they could have had him for a 1st round pick and HB Danny Ware or a 1st round pick and C Grey Ruegamer?

At this time I have come to the conclusion that the Giants front office is just cheap. Face it, they need an attitude back there and a "young" "talented" shutdown cornerback like D-Hall is just what they need. Yes they are Superbowl Champs so I shouldn’t be complaining, but the Giants have plenty of cap room with no needs for offense, and not much on D just that certain "attitude" that is lacking without Wilson, Mitchell, and possibly Strahan. I really don't think that bodes well for the 08-09 season...D-Hall is a smarter investment than Asante Samuel I mean the man is a 24 year old shut down pro bowl corner and has tons of upside, if he was on a Championship caliber team I guarantee you wouldn't see all of his antics...What's your thoughts? – Kyle H.

Kyle, no offense here, but you’re basing your opinions on a lot of misinformation. Look at how many deals Hall’s salary demands have initially broken – the Giants, the Jaguars and Oakland. Are all those teams cheap? I mean, Oakland, they of the huge contracts to marginal free agents cheap? C’mon!

Secondly, the Giants don’t have plenty of cap room – they are below $10M, which is what Hall wants per year. Explain to me how, if they cave into Hall’s salary demands, they extend Snee, Manning and Jacobs AND still pay Hall $10M a season?

If Hall’s going to be like this over money, what’s he going to be like in the locker room? C’mon Kyle, this isn’t about being cheap. This is about being smart, and if three teams are balking art trading for Hall because of his salary demand, ask yourself what’s wrong with the picture.

Lastly, I’d be willing to be you don’t know much more about Danny Ware and what he brings to the table than I do at this point, since neither of us has really seen him to an extent to where we can say, “Gee, maybe the Giants have something here.”  So how do you know he’s not another Ryan Grant in the making?

And if you trade Grey Ruegamer, who backs up Shaun O’Hara, who’s usually good to miss at least one game a year with a lower leg injury?

Thanks as usual for incisive reporting and keeping the lid on those of us who always seem to want to push the envelope and make big splashes in newsprint when it comes to Free Agency. Which as we all know is not "free" to those teams buying the talent. It is always tough on those already contracted to see that moderate talent is making leap frogs over those with frozen salaries.

I like the incentive packages the best - work hard for playing time, excel and earn the rewards of performance....too simplistic, eh? I purchased the NYG DVD but had expected to get a copy of the complete as telecast game instead of season and Bowl highlights. Is the complete game available for sale? Links to buy, please?

Current comments - I do like all of the moves so far and agree that we (and the NYG brain trust) are fine tuning a Champ, not mending broken fences. Draft - How does the college crop of receivers look like? There was mention of one at 6'6" at Indiana that may be available in low rounds. Let's go for a speed receiver even though there is interest for a LB and DB. – Terry D.

Terry, my understanding is a complete set of all the post season games is coming out in June.  Regarding free agency, I’m simply AMAZED that a number of fans don’t think things all the way through before voicing an opinion. Every move you make has a ripple effect on your ball club and you can’t just shoot from the hip otherwise you’ll destroy your franchise for years on end. Yes, it would be awesome to have a team of Pro Bowlers, but for heaven’s sake, haven’t we not learned ANYTHING from the Redskins and their tendency to overspend on “big names”?

As for the draft, that’s the one area I’m not really an expert in because I just don’t have the time to scout all the prospects (I only focus on who the Giants select once they get into the camps). Starting next week, you guys will be able to send your draft-related questions regarding the draft to our residential draft expert, who will be doing a LTTE type of forum (though not on a daily basis) leading right up through the draft.

Strahan or no Strahan? This is a tough call but I think he will be back. While it is true he’s getting old in the space between his teeth and he has absolutely nothing to prove and he would be going out on top; he is healthy, still very productive, and seems to be enjoying the game (less summer camp). Spags defense should be even better in 2008 and Strahan fits in beautifully. He is also over 15 million dollars lighter in his wallet after a nasty divorce. That should be enough to tip the scales in favor of his return and I would say ‘Amen’. -- Barry S.

Well, you know what I think about the whole situation Barry, so I really don’t have anything more to add to what was already written.

March 17, 2008

Two things. First, I also love the signing of David Carr. I view him as a true quality backup QB. I'll feel a whole lot better going into the season with him on the sideline as compared to JLoad or Wright. Secondly, Pat please STOP APOLOGIZING for the many negative words you printed about Corey Webster. At the time you were writing those comments he truly did stink, and he deserved every bad word written about him. To his credit, he got better and when he did, you correctly so noted. Thus, no apologies are due him for his past stinky play and we can move on and hope we can continue giving him credit for his much improved play. – John K.

John, I agree with you about Carr. I think that was as solid of a free agent signing as there has been this off-season. Secondly, I have no issues admitting when I’m wrong about someone or something. As you know, I ripped into Webster pretty badly and I felt pretty good in being able to go to him and apologize for doubting him (he was very gracious about it and in fact said he probably would have said the same things if he had been in my shoes). Anyway I look forward to more improved play from him.

I think the Giants are cheaping out by not going after DeAngelo Hall. They make big bucks and are way under the cap. Belichick bought a top db because he is determined to go all the way next time. Plax was supposed to be a problem; look how well he worked out. -- Alan C.

Alan, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but try to think outside of the box before falling in love with a notion. Yeah, the Giants have cap room (and not much for that matter), but then lets suppose they make the trade for Hall but come next year, they can’t lock up Jacobs or Snee because Hall is eating up $10M per year. Is he really worth that kind of money?

And for the love of God, can we PLEASE stop sanctifying Belichick? Who cares what he does? Seriously, yeah he got a top flight corner but did he win the Super Bowl? Didn’t think so.

I really don’t have anything personal against James Butler. He might be a fine upstanding citizen who kisses babies and sends money home to his mama; but the guy covers like a snow blanket in July and I know this because I am not legally blind as yet and have watched the last four NFL Network Replay games, playoffs & Super Bowl, 5 times each on a high def state of the art 32” Samsung - and James Butler stinks the place up every time.

Just because I love what Spags has done with the defense and think he may be the illegitimate son of Buddy Ryan (that’s a compliment!), I don’t suspend my judgment in the face of hard evidence and realize that even Spags is human and subject to errors in judgment. The difference between winning and losing is so thin it can pass through the eye of a needle with room to spare. With the possible exception of the Tampa game, Dallas, Green Bay, & Patriot games could have gone either way: the Pats last touchdown in the fourth quarter where they marched unchallenged down the field, came as a result of Spags decision not to blitz and expose his secondary to pressure – this is what he had said after the game and admitted he made a mistake; I respect him even more for his forthrightness.

Today’s NFL game relies more and more on the passing game. If a defense cannot consistently pressure a quarterback with its front four it must go to the blitz and as the saying goes: ‘those who live by the blitz, die by the blitz’ – and you better have good tight coverage with killer corners …and the Butler just doesn’t do it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. -- Barry S.

You are entitled to your opinion Barry. The Giants apparently disagree with you and with all due respect, if Spags believes butler is worth the price of admission, I think he’s earned it. That’s MY story and I’m sticking with it. <grin>

Explain the purpose of the Giants signing free agent players to one year contracts, i. e., Mitchell last year and Carr & Ward this year thereby creating instability when the objective is to maintain as many players under multiple years contract as possible. -- Joe M.

Joe, the shorter term contracts are usually stop-gap or transitional players brought on board for a specific reason for the upcoming season. Those who are signed to longer extensions are in the team’s long-range plans.

Although this off-season might be a little boring to those fans who prefer bidding wars and high profile player sweepstakes, I for one am thrilled to see the JR philosophy take shape. Clearly Reese's focus is DEPTH (something we might remember lacking just a few seasons ago when the Giants front office was calling in linebackers of the street to come in and suit up). I commend Reese for trusting his depth and allowing the in-house talent to develop.

Why did we draft Wilkinson? To constantly be replaced by veterans? No. I'm not saying I wouldn't want Mitchell back but I am saying that we don't need to draft or look to free agency to find his replacement. Teams that are competitive from year to year do two things. They re-sign their CORE talent (for us giant fans thats the O-line, Osi, Tuck, the soon to be retired Strahan, Plax, Eli etc.) and they let some of the solid players go find their pot o' gold.

Look, its going to be very tough to repeat next year but I think it will be a year to let Wilkinson adjust to his starting role, give Michael Johnson some time to develop into a starter and give Butler a chance to learn how to take an angle of pursuit. Maybe we bring in a pass rusher to take Tuck's old spot, Kiwanuka gets a full year at SAM, heck maybe Moss learns how to stay on the field. Then in 2009 we will make another run at Super Bowl glory. Thanks. – Michael M.

Excellent letter Michael. Bravo!

Rotoworld is reporting the Giants backed out of a deal for DeAngelo Hall because they did not want to include Danny Ware. Regardless of the truth of that rumor, who is Danny Ware? If he is so strong, we did they re-sign Ward? A second year, undrafted free agent from the Jets practice squad is "untouchable?" Do the coaches consider him another Ryan Grant? – Andrew W.

I don’t know Andrew. Remember, Ware was acquired mid-season and the team part of practice is closed to the media. But suffice to say,Ware is a player I’ll be watching in the spring workouts.

Kenoy Kennedy was recently release by the lions. He would add some needed depth at the safety position, as well as another veteran presence alongside Knight. Do you think the Giants might look into him? – Steve M.

No.

March 14, 2008

I really like the signing of David Carr. I feel he is a great backup for Eli. Carr's biggest problem has been he has had to run for his life. If, god forbid , Eli goes down , I feel that Carr would be a BETTER replacement than what we have now. Why are people so down on Butler? If Spags feels he has been doing his job, why can't WE(excluding those who believe in Butler) accept Spags POV. The times we saw Butler burned were when he could not cover for a blown assignment. I believe this had to do with his "tweaked" hamstring. Let the competition begin in training camp.-- Roger K.

I agree Roger. I’m so glad the Giants didn’t even bother to sniff around Joey Harrington. By the way, I think it’s kind of obvious that given the fact that Carr signed a one-year deal, I think the Giants are going to look to pick up a quarterback in the later part of the draft. I’d be absolutely stunned if they didn’t considering next year both Carr and L-Load would both be UFAs and I can’t see the team resigning both of them.

Last weekend we reviewed the tapes of the last 6 giant games. Besides all the obvious great things, it was everybody’s opinion that Corey Webster has become an incredible shut down corner that should get an immediate contract extension long term before another year goes by and he seeks to join the ranks of Clements and Samuels. However, that being said we should still pursue d. hall, as you can never have too many corners. We don’t need draft advice; we have J.R. -- Steve S.

Steve, While DeAngelo Hall would be a nice addition, he’s looking for much too much money right now. A guy has to fit into your scheme and into your environment and right now I can’t say I get the feeling that hall will b e a good fit into the giants locker room environment. And I’m really glad for Webster. As someone who didn’t think much of him earlier of the year, I’m more than happy to admit I was wrong.

On the occasions Blackburn has been on the field in non special teams he has done extremely well. Why do you think he isn't being utilized more? Alan C.

Perhaps because Antonio Pierce is in front of him on the depth chart?

Just took a look at the table of contents. In September'07, it looks like you have weeks 1 & 2 with the same heading. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks. – Art C.

Thanks Art. I’ve been unable to get back to the booking a couple of weeks now which is really frustrating but hopefully I can get to it soon so I can finish it.

Following a Super Bowl victory it is really hard to be critical of the Giants off season moves. Still, I am not particularly thrilled thus far. It seems to me that the defensive players we have brought in are older and less athletic. Carr to me is a real long shot. I am not sure his "processor" is suited for the NFL. I like the young man and I hope he develops into a great backup--but past performance is not encouraging. I live in North Carolina and he was a disaster down here. Possibly being reunited with Palmer will be the answer.

Perhaps I am greedy, but I really would like to see the Giants bring in at least one impact player on defensive who might bring this defense up another notch. I may be overly optimistic, but I think this defense could compete with the great defenses in NFL history if they can raise their level of play at weak-side linebacker and in the secondary. Personally, I am still holding out for the DeAngelo Hall trade. With Madison and Knight as mentors, Hall could really grow up and an blossom. He has the physical tools to be an elite cornerback. it seems to me that a conservative approach combined with a little risk taking might keep this team at the top for several years, which is what we all want. Moreover, like it or not, 9 million a year seems to be the going rate in the NFL for elite corners--but what do I know. This all complete speculation, which is fun during the off season especially when your team is the SUPER BOWL CHAMPION. In the end, I trust Reese will make thoughtful and effective moves. After all these years of free agency, I am amazed that sports commentators still list the "winners" and "losers" in free agency. Its like they wipe our their memories from the previous year. I for one will not soon forget this year, who how we got here. Best Wishes, Todd C.

Todd, you do realize that the defensive players brought in are stop-gap and depth solutions respectively, right? You speak as though they’re here for the long-term; they are not. As you said, trust Reese. The man wants to win probably worse that you do, and I can’t see him doing something to harm the team.

Now that they picked up Danny Clark, do you think they will take a cornerback or linebacker in the first round? I think they should try and pick up a good corner in free agency and draft the best possible linebacker as possible. What do you think? Thanks. – Matthew E.

Let’s wait and see first. There’s still more than a month to go before they have to decide and they could still acquire a corner or another linebacker.

March 12, 2008

Do you know if Toomer has officially come out to say he will be back in 2008? – Ray B.

Ray, judging by the interviews on his official web site, it sounds like he plans to come back.

I just can't believe that fans can complain about the Giants not doing anything to get players. Your answer was perfectly correct. Last year we "got" players; they were just rookies through the draft. And, six of the seven played substantial parts in the team's success! One of them could even become one of the outstanding RBs in Giants' history. So, guys, please give JR a little room to do his job. So far, it's been very good! – Jim V.

Amen Jim.

The Joey Harrington ideas need to just go away. The guy doesn't have a Meadowlands arm, and he couldn't win a Pop Warner game anyways. I'd like to have David Carr. The guy can be erratic, but he has more physical skills than any back-up QB we've had in a long time. With our supporting cast, this could be the scenery that he strives in. – Jeff H.

I agree Jeff. I never really not really warmed up to the idea of Joey Harrington coming in here and I’m glad he signed elsewhere (Atlanta). Now Carr is a VERY intrihguing possibility in so many ways…

I think Favre really was just done playing. He really looked like he didn't want to be out there at the end of the NFC Championship game. To wit, the interception he threw in OT - looked like he was going for a homerun play to get him off the field. It did get him off the field, just with the wrong results. – John F.

Possibly John. We might never know what was going through Favre’s mind on that last drive. Still, the game lost a class act when Favre called it quits.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm getting aggravated with all the fans and tabloid writers calling for the Giants to make bigger moves in free agency. My particular peeve is those who are asking for players who were very effective, strong character guys (like Dave Diehl and Antonio Pierce), on a squad that JUST WON THE SUPER BOWL, to be replaced. I'm not saying there aren't upgrades to be made, but the team isn't building a fantasy roster either. As a matter of fact, teams that pay big money for big names and try to fix what's already working usually pay for it when it counts (see some of the Giants' upset victims in the playoffs this year). I think Sammy Knight is a good signing: a savvy player and a nice fit in the locker room. This is the kind of cost-effective, low-profile move I hope the team continues to make. Meanwhile, they have a roster full of guys who are already at the pinnacle of the sport, many of whom have yet to reach their full potential. Subtracting good players who don’t fit into somebody’s preconceived notion of what a MLB or LT is supposed to look like will only cost us the chance to see them win another championship. Thanks! – Matt R.

I agree Matt. Big names don’t translate into wins. For heaven’s sake, look at the Redskins and the Raiders. When was the last time they won anything?

March 10, 2008

As far as the Giants, I think FS would be the position to take in the draft in there is somebody solid there, also I wonder if the Giants, like the mets with santana, are waiting to see the price for either Trufant, Hall or the guy on the Raiders comes back to them. Lastly, I know that this is a Giants board as i am a giants fan myself but as far as Favre goes and him coming out saying he's tired and done and whatever, the problem with him saying that is that he announced his retirement right after Randy Moss re-signed with the Pats and we know Favre has been lobbying this off-season and last off-season for Moss. So when people say Favre went out oh his own terms, sorry just don't buy it. – Anthony D.

I don’t agree Anthony. Brett Favre is a competitor and I really don’t believe for a second that he didn’t leave on his own terms. I wish it had been better for him (and I say that obviously with mixed feelings given how it all ended for him). I’m honored to have been in attendance at his last game.

Do the Giants have any interest in S Coy Wire recently released by the Bills? -- Joe M.

No.

We need some impact players. The Patriots lost a good (not good enough to cover Plax)CB and signed a better one. Dallas is supposed to be interested in Packman. Our GM is being careful with his $ and thats fine in not overpaying for mediocore talent. The game has changed big talent now gets big $. The Giants make hugh bucks; we have the money and are under the cap. Get us a top LT and either DB or WR. Make no mistake the Patriots are serious about moving forward as are others. If our coach is wort $21 mil (not to me) so is a top impact player. Why not Packman? Moss has calmed as has T.O., wasn't Plax supposed to have been a problem? -- Alan C.

Alan, my gosh. This team just won a Super Bowl with mostly non-descript types and you’re still worrying about the damn Patriots, who the Giants manhandled not once but twice? C’mon now. Free agency isn’t the answer. It has NEVER been the answer. You draft top talent and you groom them and you retain them. THAT is how things get done. It’s always been how it gets done. Free agency is just a short-term fix in a lot of instances unless you’re lucking out with getting a guy who’s only four years into his career and who still has a lot of mileage left on him. And even then it’s not worth it to spend twice as much on a guy who you know won’t finish out his contract than it is to develop your own.

What is the status of Sinorice Moss? This guy was in the starting lineup and was deactivated during the playoffs. I realized that Steve Smith was healthy and emerged late but what can we really expect off Moss now. He's really no good as a #4 wide receiver. What are your thoughts on Moss's future with the Giants? – Dane K.

Apparently they plan to keep him around, and possibly look to move him into more of a slot receiver role. I’ll have a better idea once the mini camps start, to be honest.

Lots of speculation that the Giants would try to improve on their backup QB situation with Cleo Lemon & Trent Green being bantered about. Now that both have/are about to sign with other teams, would Joey Harrington be a good fit for that role? There are also rumblings in Tampa that given the number of QB's on their current roster, that Chris Simms' days could be numbered there. – Nick H.

I have mixed feelings about Harrington to be honest. Simms intrigues me and now that Eli has proven himself, maybe Simms isn’t as bad an option for the right price  as I doubt you’ll see many fans screaming for the son of a Giants legend now that Eli has established himself as a giants legend, know what I mean?

March 8, 2008

Under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, teams that lose more or better "compensatory" free agents than they acquire in a year are eligible to receive compensatory draft choices. How do you see the Giants receiving Compensatory Draft Choices for last year’s Free Agency activity? The way things ended up in last year’s FA period appeared pretty lopsided with the Giants losing starting LT Luke Petitgout, CB Frank Walker (I put him here because the $$$ he reportedly signed for with GB were the same as Kawika Mitchell’s deal with NY), PK Jay Feely, and TE Visanthe Shiancoe. Balanced against these loses is the Giants signing of LB Kawika Mitchell. Nick H.

Nick, it doesn’t quite work that way. The exact formula is a secret, but I do know you have to take out of consideration Petitgout, whom the giants willingly released. Unofficially I have heard the Giants are getting an extra fifth.

During the latter part of this season and through the playoffs some of the top football brains including Bill Belichick announced their game plan would stop our running game and make Eli beat them. Most of the time they didn't stop our running game and Eli did beat them. During the last quarters of the Patriot game and the Dallas game you could see that their quarterbacks had momentarily (and maybe longer) they had "lost it". Thanks to big screen it was obvious. WHY: we all know it was Spags defensive schemes. Let's get Eli a Left Tackle to keep the "deer in the headlights" look off his face! What is the status of Plax and what is the prognosis? Are his injuries of the type that will heal on their own or will he need surgery? Looking forward to the two tight end offense. – Alan C.

Alan, I would think anyone who was hurt last year should be okay by September. Keep in mind that the players haven’t been around and there’s been no media access.

I happen to be home this week and caught the Favre press conference. All I can say is how proud the Green Bay Packer fans must be to have been blessed with not only a very talented but also a very gracious player who cared about others. The fact that the Tiki word came out in the conference was ironic because the differences are astounding regarding how the two completed their careers. As a diehard Giants fan and a NY baseball fan as well, Tiki and Glavine belong together. Go blue! – PhilH.

I agree Phil. Favre will be missed.

What's with the team bringing in a couple 32 year olds? whatever happened to bringing in young prospects? – Alex L.

My guess is these older players, who are cheap compared to their younger parts, will probably not see the life of their contracts if they sign with the giants. they are simply being brought in as stop-gap solutions until the younger players are ready.

Is it just me or does free agency and draft speculation seem to start prematurely when your team plays (and wins) in the Super Bowl? After every season I'm always counting the days until free agency opens and I missed it this year. I had to look at the calendar to see what the date was. I'm still amazed with the playoff run and Super Bowl victory. The key pieces of this team are still in place, as well as the confidence that comes with being champions, so let's enjoy another season. – Kareem A.

Kareem, I agree with you to a certain extent. I feel like this was one of the easier free agency periods to cover since I’ve been doing this and I’m grateful for that.

Of all the players that the Giants made no effort to keep, the only one I do not understand is letting go of Craig Dahl. In the few games he performed in, he showed good instincts and had better than acceptable stats. Any insights? – Paul S.

The only thing I can think of is that Dahl couldn’t pass a physical. But then again, Shockey probably can’t pass a physical now either.

I have read that the giants would like to upgrade the back up quarterback position. Joey Harrington became available today. I have followed his career and realize it has not been awe inspiring. However, for some reason I have always liked him as a person and I think he might have potential as a back up. Any interest from the Giants? – Edward C.

Not that I’m aware of.

I was surprised to read that Dahl was waived. I thought that the Giants were pleased with him especially after he played with Johnson when the other safeties were out injured. Was he just Waived or waived injured? -- Stan K.

He couldn’t pass the physical so they apparently reached an injury settlement with him.

Will the Giants have any interest in Takeo spikes? Also I am of the opinion the Giants need some depth at DT, but I hear nothing about that position in the draft or FA. – chris H.

I doubt it.

March 7, 2008
I have read various reports that claim the G-men need a "burner". Pat, what do you know about our kr Hixon. I imagine that he is fast. He may fit the bill. Another person of interest to me is Tank Daniels. I last remember him stripping the ball from the Bucs kr. He looked strong and fairly fleet of foot. He is never mentioned as a fall back when people lament at the loss of two linebackers. What do you think? – Ray B.

Ray, we don’t get to see the team part of practice during the year, so I really can’t answer the question with first-hand observations. I’ve been told that Hixon is one of if not the fastest receivers on the team. I’ll probably be better able to answer your question following the mini camps.

Pat, I have never differed with you on any subject, but you did something uncharacteristic of you in the last batch of letters. Someone was questioning why just about everybody in the press has us taking a LB with our first pick and you said you thought is was just for depth reasons. First, I have never seen you even entertain responding to what other journalist say and, second, nobody uses their first pick for depth. I guess you still haven't recovered from all the travel in the post season. Time for Pat to take a well deserved vacation after the season recap book.<grin> P.S. To the powers that be at IF: Give this woman a performance based bonus and a raise. – Jimi D.

Ack, Jimi, I think I misread the letter in question. I read it as though the person were asking why even draft a linebacker – I didn’t associate it with drafting a linebacker in the first round. I’m so sorry guys. Anyway, to answer the letter correctly (with apologies to Andrew, who asked it initially), I don’t think the Giants need to go linebacker in round one. I do think they’ll draft a LB for depth, but they should be okay with the projected starters they have and the returning young veterans.  If it were my call for round one, I’d probably say corner, though I can’t help but think that DT is going to be addressed. I also think if Strahan calls it a career, they might even try to get a DE who can also play inside as a value-need type of pick.

Some questions on your cap figures---- Strahan proration of his signing bonus 2,985,714? J. Butler salary 1,470,000 but annual cost to the cap is double? Same with J. Lorenzen. M.Hedgecock is 670,000 or 1,270,000? -- John G.

John, according to my research, Hedgecock was due to receive a roster bonus March 1.  Lorenzen and Butler’s numbers were adjusted – not sure why they doubled, but I’m guessing when I did the copy and paste function from the master spreadsheet, it picked up the old formula we had for both of them pertaining to a signing bonus (there is no signing bonus when you’re tendered a one-year offer as a rule).

Strahan I remember received a tiered signing bonus and Dockery’s SB is an estimate based on past history for undrafted free agents players signed when he was signed. Anyway, I put a corrected spreadsheet in the subscriber area and will continue to tweak the spreadsheet as I do additional research. It’s not the be-all-end-all, but I can’t imagine I’m too far off with my approach to calculating it.

On another note, my apologies, guys, if I’m a bit off my game. Again, not to make excuses, but this book project has taken on a life of its own as I’m trying to do it right and get it done as quickly as possible. It’s almost done so I suspect once that’s out of my hair, I’ll get back on my game.

Some thoughts on the defense. The D played the #1, #2, and #3 ranked offenses the last 3 games of the year and won all three battles. Clearly the D was at its best at the end of the season. Now we have lost 3 out of 11 starters on that "peak period" D. I know everyone is saying that Wilkinson will step in for Mitchell, Sammy Knight/Michael Johnson will replace an over-rated Gibril Wilson, and Kiwanuka will be back as the original starter over Torbor. No problems. I really hope that is the case. I can buy the argument that Wilkinson, Kiwanuka, and Johnson are on the upswing and will only get better. I just think these are major question marks heading into 2008. Would love to see the Giants target the secondary and linebackers early in the draft! – Pete L.

Pete, as I recall, there were a lot more major question marks last year as you also had a new defensive system, you had I think three of four guys making position switches (Kiwi, Mithcell, Wilson and I think Butler). I’d be a lot more concerned with the defense if I knew Spags wasn’t here.

March 6, 2008

Brett Favre sure went out with a lot of class. Unlike a certain Giant running back who stuck his team, coach, and loyal fans by announcing his retirement in mid season. -- Phil G.

True Phil, but as I recall, lat year Favre wavered between retiring and coming back well into the spring.

Do you think there is any chance the Toomer will be a cap casualty this year? He has a pretty high cap # and the Giants are sure to draft at least one WR. I was fairly sure he would be until his playoff performance. I'd like to the Giants keep him for one more year even if his cap # is pretty high. Plus he has always been Eli's safety net and no one has really filled that role yet. – Dave B.

I don’t think so Dave. Toomer has proven to be still productive. I do think this will be his last season though.

Am I missing something here. Why does every mock draft have us taking a linebacker? I view Kiwanuka, Pierce and Wilkinson as an upgrade. I am always in favor of adding the best available athlete at any position, but why is linebacker viewed as a position of need rather than a need for depth? – Andrew W.

Andrew, I think people are forecasting linebacker for depth, not so much as a starter.

Everybody just needs to relax about the losses in free agency. Gibril Wilson wanted top 5 safety money and he’s not even a top 10 safety in this league, got beat consistently on pass plays, but was a big hitter. Mitchell was solid at best, but after seeing Wilkinson late in the year, I believe he is ready and much more athletic than Mitchell. Reggie Torbor was nothing more than a special teams player and it will stay that way on a bad Miami team. I love the Sammy Knight signing even though he is up in age, but he is more of a complete safety than Wilson was. As far as James Butler goes, I am still not convinced he is a reliable saftely. I saw him get beat numerous times throughout the season and this kid has NO speed. Randy Moss could have given him a 50 yard head start week 17 and still blown by him thats how pathetic he looked. To me this is the only weak link on the Giants team. And everyone needs to stop with all this Shockey talk, he is a pro bowl tight end and shouldn't be the scapegoat....he has his issues, but I think he realizes now that this is Eli Manning's team. – Kyle H.

Amen Kyle.

Okay Pat, it’s the off season so there’s really nothing to fight about so I’ll start with you! Mike A. is dead on when he talks about the fact that “The Butler never did a damn thing” (my words not his) I will admit that for most of the season I had Webster & Butler in the sharpshooter’s sights and ready to pull the trigger. Webster must have found religion or something because he definitely was born again and I gladly take back all the evil things I said and thought about him; but James Butler has done nothing on the field of play to change my very low opinion of his football cover skills - in the playoffs I saw some evidence of his tackling skills but very little else. He was made to look better because of the great defense around him; he does nothing to add to it. As for Spags praise of Caesar/ Butler, Spags is not going to rip individual players in the media and possibly was a bit generous in his praise owing to the euphoric win and too much champagne! Winning trumps everything and forgives those who allow passes to be completed against us! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Barry S.

Barry, please go back and re-read the write-ups on Butler, especially down the stretch. If you don’t have them, then it’s really a fruitless “fight” to pick with me because you’re going off an assumption. Remember, you want to see players get better, not worse. Was Butler perfect? No. But he did get better down the stretch. That’s MY Story and I’m sticking with it. <grin>

Ron's letter from March 3 was right on the money. Your response is rather curious, as you say "I disagree," yet you go on to essentially agree with his basic concept. That is, it's all about the organization and the system top-to-bottom in the way you decide to spend money. I suggest you read his letter again. – Mark R.

Mark, what I disagreed with is the statement that it was unfortunate to lose the three free agents to free agency. Sorry, should have made that clearer.

Do you think it is likely and a good idea that they trade there first round pick for DeAngelo Hall and the Falcons second round pick, or trade someone for hall. they need a good young cornerback, and then they could get the best available linebacker in the second round (hopefully Dan Connor). – Matthew E.

No, not under the terms Hall is looking for. The trade is dead right now and I seriously doubt it gets rejuvenated.

I have been a loyal subscriber and have enjoyed your fine publication for over 25 years. Win or lose, I have always respected your willingness to call the play of the team in general and individual players in particular "as you see fit". I appreciate your objectivity. However, it is one such call, that of James Butler, in your 2007 Season Review, that I take issue with. You write: "Butler had an overall solid season.....". You must have been watching a different player than I each week. What I saw was a safety who nearly always played too deep, took poor angles, was mostly a step too late, and had poor ball skills. Besides, if he had such an "overall solid season", why would you suspect that he will have stiff competition for his job this year? I suggest that you re-visit your weekly game recaps re: Butlers play. Then, tell me if you still think he had an overall solid season. – Mike A.

Mike, as you know, our reports are a compilation of different opinions. Now that being said, down the stretch, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s praise of Butler’s play, got us wondering if perhaps we weren’t being fair with our assessment. Then if you factor into the equation that the Giants tendered Butler the second highest level offer in free agency instead of the minimum, maybe what we all initially saw wasn’t always Butler’s doing. Was he an All-Pro? No. But he did get better as the year went on and certainly played well when it mattered the most.

All I have to say to anyone who is upset over the loss of Gibril Wilson is "Visanthe Shiancoe". Every year there is a real head-scratcher where teams sign a "decent" player to astronomical numbers. I don't get it and I don't care. Sammy Knight looks like an upgrade to me, even if a bit long in the tooth. It will be interesting to see the contract details. – Jeff S.

Jeff, The Giants got Knight for a song and a dance. Seriously, the contract is not that bad and I don’t think there’s anyone out there who doesn’t realize that Knight is a stop gap solution until Michael Johnson is ready to go. As for the pundits who say the Giants aren’t doing anything in free agency, they’re not thinking outside of the box.

All is well in Giants Land. I am really interested to see what our wonderful Gm has up his sleeve for the draft this year. One thought though. Do you foresee the giants having any interest or making a run at Jevon Kearse? He fits the bill as far as stacking up as many pass rushers as you can get, and I am pretty sure he would come cheap. I also think he could thrive on our D line... – Lance Z.

No Lance. Remember the mantra: “younger, cheaper, faster.” Kearse doesn’t fit that bill.

I can't believe everyone is kind of losing their minds about the guys we lost in FA. Wilson hurts, but Knight is a very solid player who can fill a gap, and the G-men are paying hardly anything for a guy who led a great defense in tackles last season and had 4 picks. And nothing against Kawika Mitchell, but was he really that good? There is a reason he was signed for one year. He was a stop-gap player until Wilkinson was ready. I don't want to see a 7-9 or 8-8 year either, but I feel that Reese and Coughlin deserve a little room at this point to shape the roster the way they want. – Dan D.

It’s not that surprising Dan. People are entitled to their opinions.

I luvzz the buzz! – John K.

Glad to hear it… another report is coming up very soon, and once I get Sammy Knight’s contract breakdown, I’ll have an updated salary cap spreadsheet.

I can't argue with JR's management of this team via draft and free agency. Honestly, Gibril Wilson is a nice player but not worth the contract he got. Mitchell did a nice job for us but worthy of what he got. Having said that, do you think JR may be holding all this money to make a bigger move shortly? I agree with not giving up on Shockey yet, but if a team gives up more than he is worth, shouldn't we look into this? – Chris H.

Chris, I addressed what I think Reese is going to do with the money in the Buzz. As for Shockey, understand a few things. One, I’ve always been of the opinion that Shockey is overrated. Two, I am a firm believer that Kevin Boss is going to be a very good tight end in his league. Now that being said, Boss right now isn’t as proven as Shockey. Secondly, if you trade Shockey, who do you pair Boss up with who is a proven blocker AND receiver? So no, talks to move Shockey don’t make sense unless you’re talking a really, really, really sweet deal.

March 4, 2008
I'm really not that concerned with these loses. I'm confident that whoever Spags chooses to play a certain position is going to play well. We finally have a good coaching staff in place, This team is going to be good for a while. -- Dom M.

Whew! A voice of reason.

After last year where I doubted some of Reese's moves, I will no longer do so. Therefore I am not worried about the lack of movement this offseason. Just wanted to make that clear. But my question is that with the Giants now $20+ mil over the cap, without a major first round pick to sign, what are we supposed to do with all this money?

I agree with not reaching out and throwing money at overrated players, but we have use it somewhere right? If we can trade for an elite corner, why not pay him some big bucks? The money is almost going to waste. Also, if the current Giants such as Osi, Plax, Strahan and Diehl get more money, would that count against this cap or would it start next season? Thanks for your time. – Vick S.

They’re hoping to target their own players for extensions, Vick, which is what they should be doing in my opinion. As for when a contract extension would start, it depends. In some cases they tear up the old contract and start it right from day one. In others, they’ll start it the next year. For instance, when Justin Tuck signed his extension, it’s not going to start until 2009; he’ll play 2008 under his own contract terms.

I think we all need to applaud Jerry Reese for not getting caught up with for the second straight year with overpaying marginal free agents. Everyone should ask themselves this, with the cap money we are saving would we want to keep Gibril or be able to extend (our core guys) Plax, Osi, Snee, Eli, Jacobs & more money to Strahan if he decides to come back. To me, I would much rather take the latter. – Scott V.

Amen Scott.

March 3, 2008

Two comments: #1) why is everybody so concerned about the recent free agent losses? Torbor was only average and provided good depth as a second stringer, but as a starter, was only OK at best. Mitchell was too slow for OLB and only came on strong in the last couple of games, but seemed to miss assignments a bit much. Also, during interviews, he never appeared true blue for New York and therefore, was never a true GIANT. Wilson was erratic, case closed. In my opinion, no real losses here, only opportunity to upgrade better. All those guys were considered weak links if you ask me. #2) why isn't anyone giving DeOssie any consideration as OLB? I think he's going to surprise you with how good he can really be. -- Gary D.

Gary, we get this EVERY year and sometimes I think people just overreact just to have something to talk about. I wouldn’t say Mitchell was never a true Giant – he did want to come back here and I think he would have, but his agent wanted to shop him and in the end, Kawika did what was best for his family.  As for DeOssie, I personally need to see more of him at linebacker before I get too excited.

It was unfortunate to lose the 3 players, especially Wilson, to free agency. But it seems that the teams that spend wisely are on top more than the ones who overspend for the flavor of the month, the 49ers didn't do so well with a 10 million dollar cornerback. Wilson is a very good player, may even become a great one but is he worth 6 million per year? Before we panic we need to look at teams like Washington versus the pats. How many players have the pats let go elsewhere and always replaced. The most important areas are the qb and the offensive and defensive lines and the giants have all their starters and backups still on board. Looking at the players that Reese brought in as free agents (Hedgecock, pope, Hixon, Matthews, Dahl, and Daniels) all of whom contributed as starters or on special teams, and how well he drafted I would have to trust his judgment. I would rather see the giants pattern themselves after the pats than the redskins. Build wisely, spend frugally and don't panic over player losses. Notice the player they did resign-tuck- that would have been a really bad loss, but Reese spent wisely there. -- Ron s.

I disagree Ron. Go back and look at who they lost and for what dollar amount. Remember, it’s not so much about the players as it is about the system. If you find players to fit your system and who don’t drain your salary cap, you’ll be okay. And can we please stop comparing the Giants to New England? I know what you’re saying as far as the fundamental approach goes, but to keep comparing the two teams is almost insulting as I think the Giants have earned the right to come out of the Patriots’ shadow.

note the lack of activity in free agency; it means that the salary cap with loss of the 3 free agents and Joseph plus the loss of McQuarters will give j.r. sufficient $ to do all that you mentioned in your blog plus sign d. hall; not to mention the drop in cap from, the draft without a first round pick. The price on prime young c.b.s has been driven up by PHA, and s.f. – Steve S.

It’s all elementary and common sense here Steve. Really, I don’t understand why more people don’t realize what’s going on here… I guess it’s more exciting worry about what’s not being done than what’s on the horizon.

(1) The postseason (esp. the Packers game) helped this 58 yr old Giants fan vanquish some bad childhood Championship Game memories (i.e. the OT loss to the Cots plus those 2 losses to the Lombardi Pack).

(2) Finally, we have a Super Bowl highlight for the ages. I've grown so tired to hearing one of the greatest SB's ever played (XXV) merely called the "wide right Super Bowl".

(3) Tuck's versatility in the Four Aces lineup reminds me of the 70s "Rover Defense". Anybody remember Jack Gregory?

(4) Any chance the Giants would create a player-coach opening for Strahan? It could help him transition to a 2009 retirement, guarantee that he'd show up for camp, and put him on the sidelines for a lot of those contact drills which are no longer much fun for an aging player.

(5) Will Lt Colonel Gadson be receiving a Super Bowl ring? On one of those pre-pre-SB shows, Burress and other Giants said he deserved one. – George Z.

George, I seriously doubt Strahan takes on a formalized player-coach role. Strahan is kind of at a point now where he does what he needs to and anything extra he can probably do without. I don’t know if Lt. Col.  Gadson will be receiving a Super bowl ring; it would not surprise me if he does.

March 2, 2008

We gotta make a move.. Losing Wilson, Mitchell and Torbor is brutal.. Hope Reese has something up his sleeve. – Ryan C.

Please step back and take a deep breath. Things aren’t as bad as they seem

Are the Giants high on the idea of starting Wilkinson and Kiwanuka at the OLB spots next year? Do u still think the Giants will still trade their 1 and perhaps a 3 for either Hall, Trufant or the CB on the Raiders who was franchised but can't pronounce something Nashi Ambousgha or something. – Anthony D.

Probably and probably not.

Once again you were on the money about the three players who left as free agents. Being on a Super Bowl team always inflates a players value. Remember the CB who had 2 ITs in the Super Bowl (Brown?) for Dallas who got a big contract from another team & never did very much after that. All three very nice players for the Giants this past year but I cannot fault the Giants for not paying them the amount of money they got. And you certainly cannot blame the players for leaving when they get offered those kinds of salaries. Anxious to see what Reese has up his sleeve. – Stan K.

Stan, I’m not worried about the losses. Anyone who is headed to the nearest bridge needs to step back, take a look at things, and realize there’s a silver lining here. Good gravy, did we not learn anything from last year? I trust Reese’s judgment and I feel a lot better about him as a talent evaluator. Quite honestly, thus far this has been a rather easy free agency period to cover not just in terms of activity, but in the quality of rumors floating around.

March 1, 2008

Thanks for answering my previous question re the possibility of "franchising" Wilson. As a follow up, IF IF IF the g-men had chosen to pay him the $4.396 million this year (under the franchise tag) and then don't negotiate on a new long term deal and Wilson leaves via free agency, my understanding is the G-men would get TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS when someone else signed him. (That seems like a nice way to get two first round picks and good for the cap in the long run as first round picks come cheaper -- early on anyway). Is this understanding correct? Also, where would those two picks come from? Would they be supplementary picks or would they come from the team that signed Wilson the year after he was franchised? If the latter scenario then no team might sign Wilson if they must give up two first rounders to do it? – Derek P.

Derek, your understanding is partially correct. If the Giants had franchised Wilson as a nonexclusive franchise player (meaning he could have received offers from other teams vs. had he been an exclusive franchise player, he’s be totally untouchable) and someone had signed him away while he had that non-exclusive tag designation, then the Giants would have been entitled to compensation in the form of the new team’s draft picks (not compensation picks). If however after 2008 completed and the team chose to not franchise Wilson again, then they wouldn’t get the compensation.

But really it’s a moot point. I think you have to go all the way back a few years to find the last time that happened. The point is that you can’t anticipate that anther team will sign away your franchise player and that you’ll automatically receive two first rounders as compensation.  Secondly, the old philosophy of building through the draft still holds true, even in this era of free agency.

Will the team receive any extra draft picks because they lost Wilson, Tabor and Mitchell to free agency? – Mark Z.

We won’t know until next year, and even then it’s too soon to guess as there’s still a lot of free agency left.

Probably no one from the Giants ever reads LTTE on IF, but here goes: OPEN LETTER TO JOHN MARA: Now that Reggie Torbor has departed, PLEASE GIVE # 53 BACK TO HARRY CARSON. THEN RETIRE IT. Always glad to hear from Stan K. who, like me, goes back to the Polo Grounds. I have to agree with Stan that this was a REALLY SPECIAL year! – Jim V.

Jim, you might want to send the letter directly to Mr. Mara as you’re probably right – I doubt he reads this forum.

It can be said, that since the departure of Shaun Williams, the Giants really haven't had a hard hitting safety. Does this reflect the defense the Giants have been running or is more a factor of that position maybe evolving to another type of player? – John F.

John, I don’t think I agree with you about the Giants not having a hard-hitting safety since the departure of Shaun Williams. Wilson was a hard-hitter and Butler has shown he can e a hard hitter and so has Johnson. I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this instance as you always want to have hard hitters on defense.
