SUPER BOWL OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED
Referee MIKE CAREY has been named to head the seven-man crew of game officials selected to work Super Bowl XLII this Sunday between the New England Patriots and New York Giants at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The other members of the Super Bowl XLII officiating crew are TONY MICHALEK (umpire), GARY SLAUGHTER (head linesman), CARL JOHNSON (line judge), BORIS CHEEK (field judge), LARRY ROSE (side judge) and SCOTT HELVERSON (back judge). The Super Bowl XLII officiating crew collectively has 71 years of NFL officiating experience and 43 combined postseason game assignments.
Carey, who is concluding his 18th season as an NFL game official, served as the alternate referee in Super Bowl XXXVI. The Santa Clara University alum has officiated in 14 playoff games -- two NFL championships, four divisional playoffs and eight wild card games. Carey was the referee when the Giants and Patriots met last December 29 at Giants Stadium in the teams’ regular-season finale, a 38-35 New England victory.
Under the NFL officiating program's evaluation system, the highest-rated officials at each position with the appropriate experience earn the right to work the Super Bowl. Super Bowl officials must have five years of NFL experience and previous playoff assignments.
KEN BAKER is the replay assistant and will be working his third postseason game.

SUPER BOWL FACTOIDS
Since 1990, when the NFL adopted the 12-team playoff format, only two top-seeded AFC teams have won the Super Bowl: Denver in 1998 and the Patriots in 2003.
The Patriots, designated as the home team, are 10-0 in home games; the Giants are 10-1 in road games, their last road loss being on opening day against Dallas.

JANUARY 24, 2008: BACK TO WORK
The players and coaches go back to work today and so we'll commence our Super Bowl coverage as follows:
GIANTS FANS, BREATHE EASY
The Atlanta Falcons hired Jacksonville defensive coordinator Mike Smith as their new head coach on Wednesday night. This is significant because giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was believed to be a leading candidate for the Falcons' vacancy, but due to the Giants' stil being alive in the post season, New York denied Atlanta permission to speak with Spags until his responsibilities to the team were complete.

GIANTS HUMBLE COWBOYS; ADVANCE TO NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
There’s an old belief that every thing is bigger in the State of Texas. However for the Dallas Cowboys, who dominated the time of possession with two 36:30 to 23:30, and who had two scoring drives consisting of 10:28 and 8:07 respectively, it just wasn’t enough to best the New York Giants, who got it done the economical way in a nail-biting 21-17 win. | More | The Official Review | Hits, Misses & Musings
