The Giants released a statement regarding the outcome of Plaxico Burress' examination yesterday with Dr. Robert Anderson on behalf of VP of Medical Services, Ronnie Barnes which reads as follows:

"Plaxico and I visited with Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte yesterday. Dr. Anderson reviewed Plaxico’s MRI results and administered his own physical exam of Plaxico. Dr. Anderson confirmed our findings, which is that Plaxico has a serious sprain to his right ankle.

"Following the exam, Dr. Anderson conferred with Dr. Warren and it was determined that at this point, we will continue the course of treatment and therapy that we have used since Plaxico re-injured the right ankle when he was stepped on during the Green Bay game. Plaxcio will continue his modality therapy, and we will explore all options regarding the most appropriate shoes, orthotics and braces.

"The best prescription for this injury is rest, and as a result, Plaxico’s practice time for the immediate future will be limited. For the time being, we will continue to evaluate Plaxico’s injury on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis.”

The Giants signed rookie linebacker Rory Johnson to their practice squad today. Johnson, 6-0, 248 pounds, spent training camp on the roster of the Green Bay Packers before being waived on the final roster cutdown.

WR Plaxico Burress has an appointment today in Charlotte with noted foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. The visit was recommended by Giants team doctor, Russ Warren. Burress is being further examined by Dr. Anderson so that he can offer advice on how to best manage Burress' ongoing issues with his right ankle (not the one that was surgically repaired this past offseason.)

Further, if Manning can tolerate the pain, he’ll be able to play this weekend in the Giants’ home opener against Green Bay. If Manning is unable to tolerate the pain or feels he’ll be ineffective, he should be ready to go by next week when the Giants travel to Washington.

ROSTER MOVE: The Giants have waived FB Robert Douglas and were awarded Madison Hedgecock via a waiver claim.

Giants - Dallas Preview

September 7
Giants elect season-long team captains. Offense: Eli Manning & Shaun O'Hara; defense: Antonio Pierce & Michael Strahan; Special Teams: Jeff Feagles. This is the first time under Coughlin that the Giants have elected season long captains rather than week by week nominations.

September 3
Michael Strahan arrived at Giants Stadium shortly before 4 p.m. today and is expected to practice with the team tomorrow for the first time this season.

The seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end missed all of training camp and the team’s four preseason games. The Giants will gauge Strahan’s physical condition before determining whether he will play in Sunday night’s regular season opener against the Cowboys in Dallas.

“Michael reported to the team this afternoon,” general manager Jerry Reese said after Strahan left his office. “His arrival time here at the stadium is no reflection on his desire to be part of this team. There were some practical, administrative issues that needed to be finalized. Obviously, we are glad that Michael is back, that he wants to be back and that he wants to continue his playing career. As I have stated several times since the beginning of training camp, Michael Strahan is a Hall of Fame player and we are a stronger team with him.

"The past few weeks are behind us. We're moving forward. We're looking forward to opening the season in Dallas.

“We have requested and been granted a roster exemption for Michael. The period for the exemption is two games, which means at any point during that time we can put Michael on the active roster.”

Strahan met with head coach Tom Coughlin following his meeting with Reese.

“Michael came in this afternoon and we had a good conversation,” Coughlin said. “He wants to be here and he wants to play and it was obvious to me he wants to get to work and be part of this team. We will take the next day or so to assess where Michael is in terms of his conditioning. He has always taken tremendous care of himself. We'll see where he is and as the week progresses, we'll evaluate what kind of role he may play this week.”

Giants Add Three to Practice Squad. The Giants added three more players to their practice squad:

  • Offensive lineman Na’Shan Goddard, who was on the Giants’ roster but inactive for the first seven games of the 2006 season
  • Receiver Fred Gibson of Georgia, last with St. Louis
  • Defensive back Geoffrey Pope of Howard, who waswith Miami

September 2
The Giants continued to tweak their roster, adding two players and deleting one.

The newcomers will join the team after the Giants acquired them via waiver claims: guard Kevin Boothe from the Oakland Raiders and cornerback Dovonte Edwards from the Minnesota Vikings. Both players were waived this weekend.

The Giants also terminated the contract of veteran guard Zach Piller. With the changes, the Giants are at the regular season roster limit of 53 players.

Boothe, a 6-5, 315-pounder from Cornell, played in all 16 games and started the final 14 at right guard as a rookie last season with the Raiders. He also played on special teams.

Oakland selected Boothe on the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the 176th overall selection. At Cornell, he was a four-year starter who played three different positions. Boothe started his career at right guard, shifted to right tackle as a junior, then started the final eight games of his senior season at left tackle. He was just the fourth player in Cornell history to be named All-Ivy League three times.

Boothe was an offensive and defensive lineman at Pine Crest High in Ft. Lauderdale. He was born on July 5, 1983.

Edwards, 6-0 and 182, spent the 2006 season in injured reserve with an arm injury suffered in a preseason game at Dallas on Aug. 31. He played in all four of the Vikings’ preseason games last month and had an interception against the Jets in Giants Stadium.

A product of North Carolina State, Edwards played in 12 games with no starts as a rookie in 2005. In a Monday Night game at Lambeau Field on Nov. 21, Edwards intercepted a Brett Favre pass and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown, the second-longest interception return by a rookie in Minnesota history. It was his only pick as a rookie. Edwards finished the season with nine tackles (eight solo) and 16 special teams tackles.

Edwards joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent after earning four letters at N.C. State. He played wide receiver, cornerback and returned punts for the Wolfpack. In 2004, he was named the team’s Most Dependable Defensive Back and Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Edwards played wide receiver in 2001-02 before switching to cornerback in the spring of 2003. He started all 11 games at cornerback as a senior and had a team-high three interceptions. Edwards had 14 receiving, two punt returns and one kickoff return for touchdowns at Chapel Hill High School. He was born Oct. 17, 1982.

Piller signed with the Giants on June 7 after spending eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He was the second-team left guard throughout training camp.

The Giants signed four players to their practice squad: Wide receiver Brandon London, guard Matt Lentz, defensive end Marquise Gunn and cornerback E.J. Underwood. All were waived by the Giants yesterday.

September 1
The Giants released 21 players, traded running back Ryan Grant to Green Bay for an undisclosed draft choice (believed to be a sixth rounder) and placed safety Will Demps on injured reserve to formulate a roster of 52 players, one under the league's 53-man regular season roster limit.

Those cut included quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, defensive tackle Jonas Seawright, and rookie kicker Josh Huston.

Released were tight end Charles Davis; wide receivers Brandon London and Kevin McMahan; offensive linemen Justin Jones, Jon Dunn, Ryan Keenan and Matt Lentz; defensive ends Tommy Davis and Marquis Gunn; defensive tackle Tui Alailafaleula; linebackers James Davis and Tyson Smith; cornerbacks Gerrick McPhearson, Darren Barnett and E.J. Underwood; safety J.R. Reed; and punter Cory Ohnesorge.

Offensive lineman, Todd Londot, was waived injured (neck).

Demps is not expected to be on Injured Reserve very long as he and the team will likely come to an injury settlement which would then make him a free agent. DE Michael Strahan is expected to be added to the roster on Monday.
