The Day at Camp
The Giants worked on goal line drills today. Derrick Ward tried to punch it in on an off-tackle run, but Gerris Wilkinson did a nice job stuffing the play as he beat tackle Jonathan Dunn. Brandon Jacobs ran two successive plays; on the first, he was gang tackled by about three or four defenders, one of whom was Fred Robbins and another who was Kawika Mitchell.
Getting up and clearly agitated, on the next play, Jacobs took it to the house and scored, running over the Antonio Pierce who we think didn’t get low enough on Jacobs. On the play, he ran behind Richie Seubert, who was playing left guard.
Speaking of Seubert, he got the better of Antonio Pierce on one play, causing the middle linebacker such frustration that he yelled out “Dammit.” It was quite a work of beauty because Seubert totally neutralized Pierce.
David Diehl jumped off sides against Adrian Awasom, this not long after Osi Umenyiora cleanly beat him around the edge for a sack. Umenyiora is really a good test for Diehl because he’s so quick off the line; clearly Diehl has had his hands full with him so far this camp.
The Giants have something new this year; any time a player commits a penalty in practice, he has to run gassers after practice. We hope that this helps instill some discipline into this team, which has always had a problem with penalties. And no one is exempt from the rule – the other day Jeremy Shockey was nailed for a penalty and he was part of the group required to run gassers.
So by our count, Diehl was nailed for gassers and we also saw Jonas Seawright and Robert Douglas joining him after practice, though we don’t recall seeing what their penalties were.
Who’s Hot
DE OSi Umenyiora. In the lone practice session today, he so badly abused David Diehl and Guy Whimper (both of whom lined up at left tackle) that Diehl earned himself some post practice gassers when he jumped offside in an effort to get a head start against the speedy right defensive end.
Who's Not
WR Anthony Mix. He's not making the catches he needs to make and with rookies MArco Thomas and Brandon London making the most of their opportunities, Mix might find himself on the outside looking in unless he turns it around soon.
Quote-worthy
"A leader is not something that someone tries to make you into, it’s something you are naturally born with.” — Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey
Medical Watch
CB Kevin Dockery continues to be sidelined with what appears to be more of a severe concussion than first though. The cornerback, who suffered the concussion during the team's opening practice when his helmet fell off and he hit his head on the ground, remains sensitive to bright lights and has been unable to attend team meetings. Meanwhile, long snapper Ryan Kuehl's MRI came back negative, but he will be out for at least 3-4 weeks before he can be evaluated again. Head coach Tom Coughlin described the injury as a "severe calf strain."
Up Next
The Giants will go twice on Thursday, at 8:40 a.m. and 6:10 p.m.
