TRAINING CAMP REPORT

The Day at Camp
The Giants lone practice was cut short after about an hour due to thunder and lightning hit the area, as forecasted. The general feeling was probably one of relief by many who were there as the day was so hot and humid that to describe it as a steam bath would be an understatement.

The Giants also had the officials in to meet with the players and the press about the new rules for 2007. Among the highlights include no more spiking the ball after a play, unless it’s a touchdown; the reduction of the amount of time a referee has to review a challenged play (from 90 to 60 seconds); the revision of illegal touching of a forward pass, whereby an offensive lineman who is unintentionally hit in the back by a forward pass will no longer be penalized; and revisions to defensive holding and the defense’s ability to hit a quarterback.

Who’s Hot
WR Marco Thomas. The rookie out of Western Illinois quietly slipped under everyone’s radar  and has been looking extremely impressive in camp so far, catching everything thrown his way.

Who's Not
WR Anthony Mix/WR Michael Jennings. These two prospects, who are fighting for the remaining wide receiver spot, had a rough day, dropping passes that they should have had. Mix’s star in particular has faded rather quickly and unless he starts to turn things around soon, he might not even get his place back on the practice squad this year.

As for one-five, he’s making us look good when we say he’s all flash and dash but no substance as far as his receiving skills go. We like Jennings but the consistency just hasn’t been there so far.

Medical Watch
Tight end Jeremy Shockey was back at work today after missing both sessions yesterday with upper leg soreness. Receivers Plaxico Burress (who sprained his right ankle, which is not the one he had the surgery on over the off-season) and Brandon London sat out as did linebacker Chase Blackburn (tight or quad according to Coughlin), long snapper Ryan Kuehl and cornerback Kevin Dockery.

Up Next
The Giants will have two practices on Saturday, 8:40 and 6:10. They will then be off on Sunday.
