TRAINING CAMP REPORT

The Day at Camp
With oppressive conditions blanketing the Albany area, the Giants were back out for another practice, this time a solo deal which overall we thought was as crisp as we’ve seen in a few days. but the injury report is starting to grow a bit as the Giants progress through their second full week of camp.

So far, the only really serious injuries to come out of camp have been to long snapper Ryan Kuehl (calf strain, Achilles), OL Todd Londot (high ankle sprain), DB Michael Stone (hip flexor), and LB Gerris Wilkinson (kneecap).  All of those players are expected to miss a few weeks of playing time.

the left tackle position also appear to have been settled according to GM Jerry REese, who said as much during a radio interview today (not that there was ever any doubt as to who would win the spot to begin with).

Still up for grabs though is a spot among the receivers, where the competition is really heating up. Michael Jennings and Marco Thomas have really surprised and some have begun to wonder if perhaps special teamer David Tyree might be expendable this year (we don't think so). Over at corner back, the youth movement is temporarily on hold as first rounder Aaron Ross has been sidelined with a glute muscle strain; prior to that, he was having an up and down camp.

With the first preseason game coming up Saturday, a lot of the remaining questions should start to be answered as the Giants plan to get a long look at some of their younger hopefuls.

Who’s Hot
Eli Manning. We thought Eli Manning had a really sharp practice. He hit Michael Jennings on a deep crossing pattern and Jennings blew right by Sam Madison.   And we don't think we say Manning miss any balls thrown to Amani Toomer, who appears to be the young quarterback's favorite target.

Michael Jennings. We'll admit it. We had Jennings dead and buried before the tart of training camp, but lately he's been making a believer out of us by showing he's reliable working with the one's. Head coach Tom Coughlin praised Jennings in his post practice press conference, saying he wasn’t surprised with the show Jennings has been putting on so far. “I think you could see it coming last year.  I think he has been pretty steady most of the time.  He has shown really good quickness.”

Who's Not
Sam Madison. He was burned on at least three passes, two deep balls and one short one. What's ironic is that Steve spagnuolo's defense is the kind which Madison made his living on during his hey-day in Miami, yet his coverage abilities have been spotty so far.

Quote-worthy
"That guy's got some wheels!"

— RB Brandon Jacobs on rookie backfield mate Ahmad Bradshaw

Medical Watch
Jeremy Shockey was back on the "Bike Tour of Albany" with leg soreness, along with Plaxico Burress and back-up punter Cory Ohnesorge. Ohnesorge has actually missed a few days of practice now with an undisclosed ailment.

Defensive tackle Fred Robbins was sidelined with a calf strain while Aaron Ross (sore glute) and EJ Underwood (injury unknown) were able to do individual work but not the team work.

Linebacker Gerris Wilkinson suffered a subluxed knee cap, which in a nutshell means the kneecap moved out of place and then sprung back into place. There was no ligament damage, which is the good news. The bad news is Wilkinson’s knee is swollen and it will be at least three weeks, if not longer, before he can return.

Backup offensive lineman Todd Londot suffered a high ankle sprain and safety Gibril Wilson was back in the lineup after being forced out midway the night before with back spasms.
