TRAINING CAMP REPORT

The Day at Camp
For those who were expecting to see a spirited morning practice, they were let down as head coach Tom Coughlin instead decided to put his team through a morning job-through (what they normally do before a game. The purpose was two-fold: to allow guys who were nicked up to heal a bit and to also let some of the younger players get some snaps.

As the Giants head into this weekend and their first preseason game (against Carolina), Coughlin declared a few guys out. One of them is WR Amani Toomer, whose workload continues to be managed. another not likely to play is DT Fred Robbins, who has a strained calf. Also, Gerris Wilkinson (knee) and Todd Londot (ankle) will be spectators.

Justin Tuck, who continues to recover from foot surgery, will take limited snaps. WR Plaxico Burress (ankle) will probably not play either.

The starters will probably play for about half of the first quarter before giving way to the younger guys. One guy who is not expected to be in the one's is Guy Whimper, whose struggles have pretty much solidified the coaches' decision to keep David Diehl at left tackle. Following suit, Rich Seubert grabbed onto the vacant guard slot and hasn't let it go, holding off veteran Zack Piller. Piller will provide valuable veteran depth.

Who’s Hot
Kevin Boss. the rookie has seen his snaps with the one's increase gradually each day and appears to have moved ahead of veteran Darcy Johnson in the battle for the number two tight end spot.

Who's Not
Eli Manning. He started out strong but then his accuracy fell by the wayside as he threw two interceptions.

Quote-worthy
"Guy still has his moments, (but) there’s certain things that he’s got to learn."

— head coach Tom Coughlin, in declaring David Diehl the winner of the left tackle battle

Medical Watch
The following players missed practice: Wide receiver Plaxico Burress (ankle), defensive tackle Fred Robbins (calf), cornerback Aaron Ross (glute), defensive end Osi Umenyiora (hip), safety Michael Stone (hip) and cornerback E.J. Underwood (hip).

Up Next
Tomorrow's practice consists of a single session, at 2:40, which will wrap up the week at Albany for the team. Assistant coaches Bill Sheridan (linebackers) and Mike Pope (tight ends) are also scheduled to be available to the media. On Friday, the Giants will be doing meetings and will transport back top Giants Stadium for their preseason home opener against Carolina on Saturday. The team is then off on Sunday, and will be back on the Albany practice fields on Monday with a single practice session at 2:40 p.m.
