The Day at Camp
By now the parade of sports vehicles and luxury cars is well on its way south on the New York State Thruway, as today, the Giants wrapped up their first two weeks in Albany and now prepare to face the Carolina Panthers in the preseason opener Saturday night.
Head coach Tom Coughlin said that many of the starters will play for about a series or two, though some (like Mathias Kiwanuka) will probably go a little longer. As for the quarterback rotation, Jared Lorenzen will follow Eli Manning; he’ll then be relieved by Anthony Wright and if time permits, Tim Hasselbeck will take some snaps. If not, Hasselbeck will follow Lorenzen next weekend in Baltimore.
With that in mind, Wright took a significant number of snaps with the first team offense, perhaps to give the coaches an opportunity to see how he might do with slightly elevated talent around him. And while Wright looked better than he has, let’s just say that Lorenzen probably hasn’t lost any ground to the veteran in terms of the back-up quarterback derby.
Hasselbeck, who looked good last night, had another pass picked off, this one by Gibril Wilson who beat receiver Brandon London.
Most unusual play of the practice? A screen pass thrown by Hasselbeck bounced off the hands of Derrick Ward, to William Joseph, who popped the ball into the air where it hit center Grey Ruegamer in the back and then landed back in the hands of Ward.
Who’s Hot
WR Anthony Mix. Mix, at least for one day, seems to have found a cure for the dropsies, which has plagued him throughout camp. Will it be enough to get him past the first roster cuts? This weekend's game should provide more clues.
Who's Not
Jonas Seawright. Two days in a row now the Legend jumped early. This time he knocked center Shaun O'Hara on his fanny, also drawing some stern words from the coaching staff for his lack of concentration.
Quote-worthy
"It’s been a good while — probably never".
— TE coach Mike Pope, who went 10 questions with reporters before someone mentioned Jeremy Shockey
