The Day at Camp
The Giants were back on the UAlbany fields for a brisk single practice session. Among some of the highlights include:
QB Eli Manning, looking impressive on the whole with a nice pass to TE Jeremy Shockey toward the end of practice and two beauties to WR Amani Toomer, who was working out of the slot and who beat R.W. McQuarters on both receptions. Manning also connected with TE Jeremy Shockey on a pass that was part of the hurry-up offense.
DE Osi Umenyiora found himself flattened by Brandon Jacobs. We’re not sure what hurt worse, the blow Umenyiora took physically or the blow to his ego when his teammates started the cat-calling.
Not an overall sharp practice for many of the receivers, who had some dropped balls. Michael Jennings, who earlier in the practice made a diving reception on a comeback route, dropped a pass.
Then it was David Tyree, who beat rookie Aaron Ross earlier, dropping a ball from Manning that was right in his hands. And rookie Steve Smith, who has been very impressive so far, had a rare drop.
Lastly, add Ahmad Bradshaw to the list of players who had trouble finding the handle on the ball, as he dropped a pass from Anthony Wright.
Who’s Hot
Will Demps. Fresh off the heels of his impressive outing against the Panthers, Demps earned some first team snaps, rotating with Gibril Wilson and James Butler.
Justin Tuck. Tuck took a significant number of snaps at defensive end, with William Joseph getting work inside at tackle.
Who's Not
Matt Lentz. Lentz has been trying to gain experience at center, but it's not exactly coming along as he had yet another botched exchange with the quarterback. Also not helping matters is the fact that he can't seem to stay on his feet for the down field blocks that the offensive linemen need to make at that second level.
Quote-worthy
“I wouldn’t even discuss anything like that.”
— head coach Tom Coughlin, when asked if he envisioned
a point time when he'd ask holdout DE Michael Strahan to not bother showing up.
Medical Watch
Rookie corner Aaron Ross, who missed most of last week with a strained gluteus muscle, was back at practice today as was corner E.J. Underwood. They were joined by Amani Toomer and Fred Robbins (calf), both of whom missed Saturday’s preseason opener.
Missing from practice were receivers Plaxico Burress (ankle) and Marco Thomas (groin), tight end Kevin Boss (shoulder), kicker Lawrence Tynes (calf), safety Michael Stone (hip), linebacker Gerris Wilkinson (knee), center Todd Londot (ankle), long-snapper Ryan Kuehl (calf) and defensive back Travonti Johnson (hip).
Quarterback Jared Lorenzen was hit by Kevin Dockery and twisted his ankle. Although J-Load soldiered on after having his ankle wrapped (and Dockery got an earful form the head coach), Coughlin did say that the team would watch for any overnight swelling.
Up Next
