TRAINING CAMP REPORT

The Day at Camp

Lots going on in terms of roster moves and fireworks, so let's get right to it.

First the roster transactions:

  • Former Eagles defensive back and kick returner J.R. Reed was signed.
  • WR Will Buchanon off waivers from the Raiders.
  • WR Michael Jennings (Achilles) and DE Charrod Taylor (foot) were waived/injured. If Jennings clears waivers, chances are he'll end up on the team's Injured Reserve list.
  • Tackle Dan Parrish, who was added to the roster last week, was waived
  • Georgia OC Nick Jones was signed.

Some good news. Plaxico Burress (ankle) and Steve Smith (concussion) were back at practice today. Burress told reporters at lunch time that his sprained right ankle feels as good as it's going to get, but one can't help but wonder if someone probably gave Burress a little nudge out of the trainer's room.

Burress by the way, didn't show any ill effects from his sprained ankle, as he burned R.W. McQuarters and took Gerrick McPhearson and Corey Webster to school on more than one occasion.

Corey Webster is getting reps with the first team, in place of the injured Sam Madison. However, first rounder Aaron Ross is expected to get some snaps as well this week, so it's too soon to award the job to Webster by default.

The Giants are said to have no interest in linebackers Jeremiah Trotter, cut by the Eagles, or Lemar Marshall, cut by the Redskins. Remember: "Younger, cheaper, faster." Besides, the Giants have an abundance of promising talent at linebacker.

Who’s Hot
QB Eli Manning. Kudos to the Giants signal caller for firing back at Tiki Barber who sunday night called Manning's leadership "comical" at times. Barber continues to come across as a disgruntled former employee while members of the Giants continue to take the high road.  Anyway, Manning proved that he does have a pulse, a sign that he's developing into a leader in our book.

TE Kevin Boss. The rookie shook off a shaky outing Sunday night with a strong performance, making two nice receptions from passes by Jared Lorenzen and Eli Manning, the latter of which went for a touchdown. The first pass, thrown by Lorenzen, was initially intended for David Tyree, but Boss alertly made the play when the ball zipped through Tyree's hands.

Who's Not
OL Matt Lentz. Playing with the second team, Lentz overshot yet another snap, this one over QB Anthony Wright's head. With Grey Ruegamer on the shelf the remainder of the preseason, Lentz, who's looked shaky at center, seems to have gotten a reprieve for now.

Quote-worthy

— Receiver Amani Toomer, wondering who former teammate Tiki Barber will attack in his next media rant against the Giants

Medical Watch
